Hilario "Larry" Chavez Named New Superintendent
The SFPS Board of Education announced its selection of Hilario "Larry" Chavez, SFPS' associate superintendent of athletics/activities and school support, as the new superintendent on April 17th. The Board offered Mr. Chavez a one-year contract and an annual salary of $175,000. Mr. Chavez will assume the position on July 1st.

In Mr. Chavez, the SFPS Board has selected a multi-faceted leader who is well versed in the SFPS community and aspects that are critical to educational excellence. His foundation in special education, his achievements uplifting secondary education and athletics for the district and his work in collaboration with SFPS’ team to institute reforms that increased the district’s graduation rate to an all-time high all speak to his strong skills and experience. His listening to community members and his track record of collaboration were also strong considerations for the Board,” said SFPS Board of Education President Kate I. Noble. She noted that Mr. Chavez works with his head and heart.

Superintendent Dr. Veronica C. Garcia said, "My enthusiastic congratulations go to Larry Chavez on his appointment as superintendent of our beloved SFPS! We've already begun working together to ensure a seamless transition so that he will be able to hit the ground running on July 1st. I have every confidence in him, that he will maintain our district's efforts to implement continuous improvement practices to continue our trajectory to be the #1 highest-performing district in the state. He is a strong leader who believes in the power of a strong team. Go Team Santa Fe!"

Mr. Chavez said, “It is with great enthusiasm that I accept the position of superintendent for the Santa Fe Public Schools. I am passionate about Sante Fe and take to heart the hopes and dreams of our schools, students and staff. My commitment is to continue doing what works: collaboratively sharing best practices, ensuring a unified group of leaders, and addressing the social-emotional needs of staff and students. Through a shared vision for excellence with the Board and community, we will bring learning to new heights in the district."

La Junta de Educación de SFPS anunció su selección de Hilario "Larry" Chavez, superintendente asociado de atletismo / actividades y apoyo escolar de SFPS, como el nuevo superintendente el 17 de abril. Student testing coming to all schools
Student surveillance testing is coming to all SFPS schools! Under the voluntary program, offered through the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED), testing can identify COVID cases involving students that might otherwise go undetected. Testing is expected to launch on April 26th, although SFPS is awaiting information on parent and student permission forms from PED. SFPS is sending out a Google form to parents to gauge their interest in the testing program, which is available at no cost.

Student testing programs are voluntary, opt-in services. No student is required to be tested. Consent from parents will be required for minor children or from students who are 18 or older.
Las pruebas de los estudiantes llegan a todas las escuelas
¡Las pruebas de vigilancia estudiantil están llegando a todas las escuelas de SFPS! Bajo el programa voluntario, ofrecido a través del Departamento de Educación Pública de Nuevo México (PED), las pruebas pueden identificar casos de COVID que involucran a estudiantes que de otra manera podrían pasar desapercibidos. Se espera que las pruebas comiencen el 26 de abril, aunque SFPS está esperando información sobre los formularios de permiso de padres y estudiantes de PED. SFPS está enviando un formulario de Google a los padres para evaluar su interés en el programa de pruebas, que está disponible sin costo alguno.

DOH, PED announce May 3-8 student vaccination week
The New Mexico Department of Health and Public Education Department have designated the week of May 3-8 Student Covid Vaccination Week. Students ages 16 and older will be given priority for first-dose appointments made through the DOH COVID-19 Vaccine Registration System. Expanded hours to better meet student needs will be available through some vaccination providers. Once students are fully vaccinated, they will not have to quarantine should they be identified as close contacts of a COVID-19 positive individual. Fully vaccinated students are also not considered part of the student surveillance testing pool. DOH y PED anuncian la semana de vacunación estudiantil del 3 al 8 de mayo
El Departamento de Salud y Educación Pública de Nuevo México ha designado la semana del 3 al 8 de mayo como Semana de Vacunación Estudiantil Covid. Los estudiantes de 16 años o más tendrán prioridad para las citas de primera dosis realizadas a través deldel Sistema de registro de vacunas COVID-19DOH. Algunos proveedores de vacunación dispondrán de más horas para satisfacer mejor las necesidades de los estudiantes. Una vez que los estudiantes estén completamente vacunados, no tendrán que ponerse en cuarentena si se los identifica como contactos cercanos de una persona positiva a COVID-19. Los estudiantes completamente vacunados tampoco se consideran parte del grupo de pruebas de vigilancia de estudiantes. Los estudiantes también pueden vacunarse antes o después de esa semana. SFPS to celebrate 2021 and 2020 graduates
SFPS para celebrar los graduados de 2021 y 2020
SFPS will celebrate graduates from 2021 and 2020 this year. Graduates of 2020 should notify their alma mater by May 7 if they plan on participating in this year's ceremony. The 2020 graduates will be identifiable during the ceremony.

All graduations will be held outside, with capacity to be determined two weeks prior to the ceremony.

Separate graduations for Desert Sage Academy, Early College Opportunities High School and Mandela International Magnet School will be on May 26th at the Old Capshaw Football Field.

Capital High School's graduation is on May 27th and Santa Fe High School's graduation is on May 28th at their respective football fields.

SFPS celebrará a los graduados de 2021 y 2020 este año.  Los graduados de 2020 deben notificar a su alma mater antes del 7 de mayo si planean participar en la ceremonia de este año. Los graduados de 2020 serán identificables durante la ceremonia.
 
Todas las graduaciones se llevarán a cabo al aire libre, y la capacidad se determinará dos semanas antes de la ceremonia.

Career opportunity from Northern New Mexico College and LANL for high school juniors, seniors
Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) in partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is offering juniors and seniors a chance at a sustainable career with vast room for growth through the Radiation Protection Program.

Under the program, NNMC trains students for entry-level radiation control technician positions while providing tuition, fees, a paid student internship at LANL and more!  

Applications for the program are being accepted through May 14th. A complete application includes a resume, cover letter, a personal essay on interest in radiation protection and available transcripts. Upon successful completion of the program, students commit to employment at LANL as a radiation control technician for no less than three years.
