Greetings Beaver Fans,
We had some awesome performances from our athletes this spring and it was a privilege to watch all the post-season action the last couple of weeks!

~ Eric Ensign, Athletic Director
Our Boys’ Soccer team had a usual strong run through the regular season in Metro, the most competitive league in Washington. After a tough loss to Chief Sealth in the Metro Tournament, the team went on one of the most magical runs I’ve ever seen in high school sports. After defeating Roosevelt 7-1, we beat Garfield and finished off the tournament with redemption in taking out Chief Sealth when it mattered most and earned a 14 seed going into the state tournament. After an impressive 5-0 win over a talented Kent-Meridian squad, the team took on #3 seeded Shorewood, beating one of the top teams in the state. The team then defeated fellow Metro teams Seattle Prep in the quarter finals, before a dramatic win over Lakeside that ended in penalty kicks to make it to the State Championship against unbeaten Lincoln. Even though we lost a very tough fought battle in the championship game, the post-season performance was one of only a handful for teams that have made it to the State Championship in Ballard High School history.
Congratulations to our players who received Metro Mountain Division All-League honors:
  • Lucas Sussman (first team defense)
  • Gray Levasseur (first team midfield)
  • Jacob Watson (first team midfield)
  • Elijah Post (second team midfield)
  • Carson Ruegamer (second team forward)
  • Maxwell Goldstein (second team forward)

Fastpitch Softball picked up where they left off last season with a strong showing in the Metro League again. Ballard finished with a 11-4 league record going into the Metro Tournament where we had big wins against West Seattle and Seattle Prep and earned a first-round bye in the District 2 Tournament at Southwest Athletic Complex. After losing to a very talented Liberty team, we had two huge wins against Lake Washington and Juanita, earning a trip to State for the second year in a row. Trinity Miller (3rd base) and Liz Bell (shortstop) were both All Metro first team selections, while pitcher Colette Howren, catcher Katie Davis, Addy Wynkoop (3rd base), outfielders Payton Habel and Wren Norris were chosen as All Sound Division players. As the program continues to grow, and with almost all our players returning next year, look for the team to have another successful season and get back to State! Photo c/o @ballardbeaversoftball
In his second year as head tennis coach, former BHS athlete John Marstall, had another successful season. In Metro League play, the boys' varsity team had impressive wins against Eastside Catholic, Ingraham and Nathan Hale, finishing the regular season with an 8-5 record. Our girls’ team had big wins against Nathan Hale and Rainier Beach and finished the season with a 3-10 regular season record. In postseason play, we were well represented with 12 players in the Metro Tournament for Ballard Tennis. Our boys’ singles participants were Silas Healy and Cole Nguyen, and our girls’ singles were Alexa Terry and Sabi Yoon. Our boys’ doubles participants were Asher Seibel with Nils Hoerlein and John O'Neil who paired with Jonathan Naumann. Asher and Nils took 8th place and moved on to districts. For girls, our doubles were Lauren Oboy with Katherine Mullins and Cami Martinez who teamed up with Sienna Lee. Silas Healy placed 9th in Metros and competed in the boys’ singles division at Districts. Photo c/o @ballardhighschooltennis
In Track and Field, once again our team had huge participation with 147 athletes who started the season. Congratulations to all the students who competed in the State Meet. Almost every event ended up with us performing as we were ranked coming in or exceeding our placement. We had some amazing individual performances: Madeleine Koenig tied her PR to place 5th in the girls' pole vault to finish on the podium and score points for the team! Cassidy Armstrong entered the 3200 ranked 12th and finished in 9th place in a new PR and new SCHOOL RECORD with an extremely fast girls 3200m run! Hazel Engstrom entered the triple jump ranked 11th and finished in 10th and one spot out of qualifying for the finals, after only her 6th time competing in triple jump in her career. Annelise Glover, Lucie Westerman, Siena Stonebraker and Hazel Engstrom finished 12th in the girls 4x400m relay. They entered ranked 13th in the preliminaries and gave it a solid effort to qualify for the finals. Mahlia Muwero, Anna Simpson, Jill Sousley, and Annelise Glover finished 13th in the girls 4x100m relay. They placed as they were ranked and ran their second fastest time all season. Cassidy Armstrong finished 17th in the girls’ 1600m run in her second fastest race in her career.
Our Baseball team had a solid season finishing with a winning record in a very tough Metro League, where several teams made it to the State Tournament. We had solid wins against Seattle Prep and O’Dea. In postseason play, baseball had a huge win in the Metro Tournament over Chief Sealth, a team that had beat us in the regular season. The future is looking bright as our JV team finished with a record of 14-7. Congratulations to senior Captain Max Finkelstein on earning 2nd Team All-Metro infield honors. The Pacific University Boxers commit hit .329 with a .384 OBP and led the team in doubles. He also held down shortstop and turned in a dazzling .955 fielding % with only four errors in 88 chances. Also, congratulations to senior Kaden Larson on being named a 2nd Team All-Metro pitcher. The Lower Columbia College Baseball commit led the staff with 43 innings and 41 K’s of 2.73 ERA ball, with complete game shutouts against O’Dea and Roosevelt. Junior Adam Tripp was also selected for 2nd Team All-Metro as an outfielder. Tripper hit .314 with a .400 OBP out of the leadoff spot and led the Beaver Batsmen in triples and RBI.
In Girls' Lacrosse, Head Coach Ann-Marie Dion reported: The Girls Lacrosse program had a wonderful 2023 season! We welcomed six new players to the sport of lacrosse and said tearful goodbyes to our six seniors. Our JV team played a touch schedule and improved every single game, culminating in a big win in their last game of the season against Roosevelt. Our Varsity team battled defensively all season against multiple top-10 teams. A lot of close games made for exciting lacrosse and showed how far the team had come throughout the season. We placed two players on the Metro All-Conference Team: Louise Whitman (Senior Goalie), and Tess Keenan (Freshman Defense). Congratulations to all of our players, and good luck to our class of 2023 in their future endeavors. Photo c/o @bhs_girlslax.
In Boys' Lacrosse, first year Head Coach Ray Pryphun reported: This season saw many successes and is telling of amazing things to come for our program. We won the Metro Public Conference outright for the first time in living memory by beating Bainbridge on the island, finished 3rd overall in a Metro public/private play off, and ended our season with a tough overtime loss in the state quarterfinal game. Our players worked hard as a team, earned every win this season, and several were recognized for their performances. We had 3 first team All-Conference recipients in Quinton Brewster (SR), Luke Berard (JR), and Cody Lavin (SR) as well as 3 second team All-Conference recipients with Owen Willis (SO), Aidan Bernard (SR), and Carter Garrison (JR). Aidan Bernard, a senior co-captain and 2nd team All-Conference selection, earned Academic All-American recognition for hard work on the field as well as in the classroom with a weighted cumulative GPA of 4.14. Our goalie and senior co-captain, Cody Lavin, earned his third 1st team All-Conference recognition and was recognized by coaches in our league as a Washington State All-American. He will represent Pacific Northwest lacrosse at the Division 1 level next year at Monmouth University. We are beyond proud of his accomplishments and can't wait to see him excel at the collegiate level!
BUF Girls' Varsity Team had a fun and challenging season playing against many nationally ranked opponents. The team also participated in the two-day Girls Invite Tournament in Burlington, WA. Every game was hard fought, and the team showed amazing growth both in skills and teamwork as the season progressed. Congratulations to our seniors: Anne Welman, Clara West, Hahna Beaudoin, Monserrath Eckert-Mariscal, Sadie Clark and Lina McRoberts. We'll miss you! Photo c/o @bufballard
