HSC Opens 100-bed Shelter: "Respiro"
HSC is pleased to announce the opening of Respiro! After an initial idea to create more COVID-relief space, timing and resources finally aligned with support from the City of Phoenix. Respiro is a 6,300 sq. ft. prefabricated 100-bed shelter located on the Campus adjacent to the St. Vincent de Paul Urban Farm. Individuals will be able to access the facility from Jackson Street.

“As the name indicates, Respiro will provide critically important respite for 100 people experiencing homelessness now living on the streets outside the Human Services Campus, a number that has increased significantly over the last six months,” said HSC Executive Director Amy Schwabenlender. “This much-anticipated resource will, at least in part, address the desperate need for shelter space in the Valley.”

Respiro is designed to be flexible in allowing people and pets for overnight shelter. Daytime operations to allow individuals to stay indoors all day will follow as staffing needs are completed. With over 1,000 people now living on the streets surrounding the Campus, this is a model that HSC hopes will be replicated across Maricopa County.
Hygiene Services Open for Unsheltered
Flexing and adapting services is a lesson learned through the pandemic. Living unsheltered and unhoused on the streets is challenging to say the least. With a lack of public facilities, the need for hygiene services is high. In partnership with City of Phoenix, HSC opened an area at 9th Avenue and Jackson for toilets and sinks. Potable water will be added before summer fully hits. Unsheltered individuals living on the streets surrounding the Campus are able to access this area 24 hours per day.
ThirstAid Heat Relief Campaign Starts May 7th
With summer upon us, we need at least 60,000 bottles of water per month to help clients stay hydrated and healthy. The first bottled water donation drop-off of the summer is Saturday, May 7th from 9am to noon, and it couldn’t be easier. You pull up at 15th Avenue & Harrison St., and our staff will remove the donations from your vehicle. We also welcome travel-sized toiletries, summer clothing, shoes, new men's/women's underwear, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm. For more information or to schedule a drop-off on a different day, please email volunteer@hsc-az.org or call us at 602-282-0849.

And a big thank you to our partner St. Joseph the Worker, the originator of ThirstAid, for promoting collaboration among Campus partners to ensure our collective clients have water to drink as they work on ending their homelessness.
