Discovery simulation in Grade 3

In Social Studies, the third graders are in phase one of the Discovery simulation.  In this part of Discovery, we're learning about the motivations of the people who came from England to colonize America.  We're also completing mapping and other activities to earn "wealth units" which we'll soon use to purchase food and supplies to sail off to the New World.  Will we have enough people, supplies and food to be successful?  Phase two begins when we reach Virginia and begin farming, hunting, and fishing.  This simulation utilizes a lot of math (everything must be carefully calculated), language arts (we'll be writing diary entries as colonists in phase 2), and, of course, we're learning a lot about early America.

This week in Middle School...

Un dejeuner exquis!

Our lunch experience at Fleurie was outstanding! Erin Scala, owner of the restaurant, welcomed us warmly for a "private dining" experience. She went out of her way to make our student's experience as equally gastronomic as educational, giving us, for example, a little history of  the restaurant's concept.

Students ordered their meal in French, and some enjoyed developing their palate with something scrumptious that they never tasted before.

Our lunch concluded with delicious "petits fours" and a fabulous creme brulee demonstration by the excellent French pastry Chef, Serge Torres. (You can see a very short video of it on smugmug).

Thank you, Monsieur Miller for being our extraordinaire chauffeur. Encore merci a tout le personnel du restaurant Fleurie!
