Vision News and Updates                          April , 2019

Members, please do not bring art for this meeting as we will be voting on the High School Art Competition.
Artist: Lin Hampton
Wednesday, April 3, 6:45  - 9pm

Join us for our April artist presentation by oil and pastel artist Lin Hampton. Hampton will present information on painting with pastels and demo nstrate different  techniques you  can use to  get a specific effect from
environmental to textural - that helps to elicit an emotional
response from the viewer. She uses a contemporary, distinctive stroke to render her work in a traditional view of everyday life, utilizing oils on canvas or wood panel, or pastel on board.

"My work has developed over the years into a very distinctive process and "signature style."
What inspires me to transform a particular landscape or figure into a two dimensional image, comes from the 'spirit' of the subject. If you look closely at my work, you might sometimes find little hidden items, scenes within a scene, or a symbol created with my unique 'mark'. As I creat
e, I incorporate  my thoughts and ideas
into my work."

Long time resident of Denton, Texas, Lin Hampton is active in the Visual Arts Society of Texas and has competed and placed in national and regional competitions, including receiving an award of the Grumbacher Gold Medallion.

Lin Hampton's work can be seen at studiointheback.com.

Meetings are held at the Patterson-App leton Arts Center,  400 East Hickory St,
Denton, TX.
Next Meeting: May 1 , 2019 , 6:45 - 9:00 pm

Can You Help Out With the  Merging Visions Exhibition?

Dear VAST Members,

Our joint exhibit with the Denton Poet's Assembly will have its opening night (before its 3 month run at the PAAC) on June 7, 2019, at 6 pm to 8 pm. It will be a grand opening reception and we encourage all member and their friends and families to put this on their calendars right now!

Thus far, to cover VAST's expenses of the reception and one-half of the printing costs of the Catalog for the  Merging Visions exhibit 2019 (less a generous grant of $1000 from Denton Benefit League this year), VAST has received donations from 7 members to a total of $570 (plus an additional very generous member donation to be applied to the catalog publication). Thank you (a lot!) to these donors.
  • We are SO LUCKY to have the sponsorship of Greater Denton Arts Council to help us with exhibit space at no rental cost to the exhibit.
  • We are SO LUCKY to have dedicated volunteers who spent time and energy (their own!) to go before the Grants Committee of DBL to apply for and receive the group's grant money.
  • We are SO LUCKY that we have had volunteers from both VAST and DPA who have met and worked for a full year to once again bring about this really interesting, fun, and popular exhibit.
BUT, your board of directors was counting on more members assisting in paying for this special exhibition with their donations. PLEASE consider supporting the Merging Visions exhibit 2019 with your dollars. This year, due to lack of exhibit space in the city of Denton area that is free, we have had only two exhibits. This exhibit, which will be at the start of our next fiscal year, needs your support NOW. Bring your checkbook and your credit card (I promise to have a working system by then) to the April 3, 2019 Members' Meeting at the PAAC, and let your heart lead to supporting this wonderful exhibit. ALL DONATIONS RECEIVED BY MIDNIGHT ON APRIL 3, 2019 WILL BE RECOGNIZED AS SPONSORS IN THE EXHIBIT CATALOG.

If you wish to buy a catalog only, now is the time to order one. They are $20. If you order one on PayPal the cost is $21.

I thank you for reading this.
Carol Rowley, Treasurer

VAST Membership Drive is Going on Now! Our VAST year ends May 31.

Members and new members who pay their dues by April 30, 2019 WILL RECEIVE A FREE ENTRY OF TWO ART WORKS FOR THE 2020 Calendar Competition.  Cost to enter the Calendar Competition after 4/30/2019 will be $20 for entry of two art works for consideration.

Such a deal!! See Membership Info toward the bottom of the newsletter.  Come prepared to pay your dues at the April meeting.

To Pay Dues Online

Want to pay your VAST fees, dues, donations or sponsorships at midnight in your pajamas? If you are a PayPal user, here's what to do:

Open your personal PayPal account and look for the tab saying Send or Receive Money. Send the total amount of your purchases (sponsorships & catalogs for Merging Visions, Dues, VADO Fees, Donations for the Members' Exhibit cash awards, Critique, cash donations of any kind) to the PayPal account of VASTArtsTreasurer@gmail.com .

Please be sure to put in the "note" section of your own PayPal screen:

           (1) your full name, and

           (2) EXACTLY what you are purchasing.

Press the "send" button in PayPal and the payment is on its way to VAST.

PayPal will charge VAST 2.9% plus 30 cents in fees for a transaction. So if you are feeling kind-hearted and generous (and we hope you are!), add a little something extra to cover these fees (after all, you are saving the search for stamps, envelopes, and the midnight walk to the mailbox!). We appreciate all of you credit card holders, and we haven't raised our prices to cover our credit card expenses. Your help in paying extra will help us toe the line on our fees in general.

"Outside the Box" exhibition at POINTBank Black Box Theater
Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST) artist Barbara Lindley is being featured with a solo exhibition, Figprint of my Imagination  at the Point Bank Black Box Theater, January 25 - May 2.  Barbara Lindley  was named VAST Artist of the Year for 2017-2018.

At the end of a corporate career that took her all over the world, Barbara Lindley feels she has finally found her niche. While her work as a contract negotiator was challenging and intellectually stimulating, a restlessness lingered as her artistic inclinations were confined largely to cooking and gardening. Her first attempt at retirement left her feeling directionless and unfulfilled and she quickly returned to work. When she retired the second time, she knew she needed to pursue her creative aspirations. She enrolled in a painting class in 2016.

Lindley works primarily in watercolor and enjoys experimenting with non-traditional paper and pigments. Her subjects are varied and include florals, botanicals, architecture, still life, landscapes, and wildlife. She admits that she is still finding her artistic voice and augments that pursuit with continued art instruction and the study of light, composition, and color.

"Every painting is a new lesson, and it's my goal to be a lifelong student."
Barbara Lindley

VADO - VAST Artist Day Out
VADO is our name for Vast Artist Day Out. It's held the first and third Thursday of each month except November and December. VADO has undergone changes this year, but is still a great opportunity to get to know other members and enjoy the fellowship of other artists.  We meet the first Thursday at the Beulah Center at 7801 S-I35 E., Global Spheres in Corinth and the third Thursday at PAAC (Patterson-Appleton Arts Center.) The time is from 10 A.M. until 1 P.M. at the Beulah Center and 9:30 - 12:30 at the PAAC. We bring something to work on and/or to share with our VADO friends. It is not a teaching situation, but we all learn from each other!

The VADO fees for the new fiscal year, June through next May, are $55.

Please email me, Fran Shurtleff, at fmrws@centurytel.net to let me know if you wish to come to VADO in our coming year - or if you have any questions.

And, yes, lunch out together after VADO is always a great treat!
