Oakville Transit free for

Youth and seniors

starting May 1

Youth aged 13 - 19 and seniors 16+ will be able to ride Oakville Transit for free starting May 1st.

Free transit for youth and seniors was approved by Council as part of the town’s 2023 budget.

The cities of Mississauga (free for children 6 - 12) and Guelph (free for high school students, seniors) have passed initiatives to provide free transit to different age groups because they also see the benefits of increasing ridership and encouraging youth to start using public transit.

Oakville will be one of the first to grant all-out free transit for youth and seniors alike.

“Providing free public transit for youth and seniors is an important investment Council is making to enhance transportation options for the overall well-being of our community. Removing the cost to travel on Oakville Transit means more people can get around town more easily and will increase uptake in transit usage. Free transit promotes sustainability and equity and supports Council’s continued efforts to create a thriving and livable Oakville.” – Mayor Rob Burton

Mayor Burton met with MPP Stephen Crawford and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Steve Clark to discuss how the Ministry and town can collaborate further in order to increase housing supply and address other municipal matters for the benefit of the Oakville community.

Home Energy Retrofit Program

Special Council meeting of April 4, 2023

Council received a staff report on the Home Energy Retrofit Program at last night's meeting of Special Council.

The meeting highlighted how new economic and governmental incentive programs have changed the landscape for home retrofit programs to incentivise homeowners to act for themselves.

"Our top two governments and major businesses have now responded to municipal declarations of climate emergency in 2019 with encouraging measures including major incentives that we can more leverage in an updated plan that I think the Region of Halton can manage and minimize the impact on taxpayers," Mayor Burton said.
