Message from President
Carrie Pavis
Hello Beautiful Soroptimist Members,
I hope you are all doing well and finding ways to keep yourselves busy.

Thank you all for voting. I am happy to report that we had a quorum, the Election of Officers, Motion 24 and Motion 25 all PASSED.

This month the Delegates and I will be voting for our District 1 Officers. Their videos and resumes are now on the SNR website. See article below with the list of officers and website link.

Make sure you read Governor Lane's Message for the latest updates and SNR Membership Chair Trudy Mills, Membership Message further down in this E-blast.

I miss you all, please stay safe and healthy.

President,
District 1 Election of Officers
If you have time and interest in assessing the candidates and having input, please let President Carrie or any of the Delegates, Kimm Randle, Jeanne Smith, Bev Rozendaal, or Vanessa Haro know prior to the close of voting on April 20. We will cast votes on behalf of SI Chico.

There are videos on our region website, https://www.soroptimistsnr.org/ along with resumes. This will give all delegates the opportunity to ‘meet’ the candidates to make their choice. Their videos will be a maximum of 2 minutes, as that’s how long they would have had to address the membership at conference.

Ballots have been sent to all delegates.     Voting will close on  April 20 .   Results will be verified by the elections committee and results will be posted  by April 25 , our original election day.

Governor Lane's Message
Let’s all take a deep breath!! You know, it really does help! Here’s a few updates to share with you!

May 11 :  This is currently our date that SIA has advised us to not have any club activities. We need to abide by this and I am proud of all of you for doing just that for the health and safety of our members and supporters.

Video meetings:  With that date in mind, many clubs have started using video, virtual meetings. There are several formats available, but I think your region board is going to use ZOOM. They have a free version that can have up to 100 participants, but meetings can only be 40 minutes. They also have a “PRO” plan that doesn’t have a limit on the time of the meeting, It’s $14.99 monthly or $149.99/year. If your club signs up with TechSoup.org, you can get 50% off the price, plus you'll have access to deep discounts on other software, hardware and technology.

Here is a link to ZOOM:   https://zoom.us/   then click on Plans and Pricing. Even better, here is a link to ‘How to Use Zoom”:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMUxzrgZvZQ&fbclid=IwAR3cGDlQX2lCrlMWb_QSqgAhA379j4qzInwHOOmg2BgEBCbXaaxy5JltaSc&app=desktop

Here are some hints to help make it a smoother meeting:
1) You need to have a microphone and camera to get the full experience of ‘meeting’. If your computer doesn’t have these, you can download the app on your smart phone or tablet.
2) when you are not speaking, it’s best to ‘mute’ your microphone so that everyone doesn’t get feedback and background noise
3) As with any meeting, try to stay on topic
4) raise your hand to be recognized by the chair, unmute yourself when recognized 4) State your name when you start to speak if anyone is taking minutes. What a great opportunity to learn something new!!

Elections:  The bright side of a situation like what we are all living through is seeing things through a new lens and being forced to do things a new way! That’s what we are doing with elections as well!
  • Club presidents have verified their club delegates with our Region Credentials Coordinator, Kay Dunham and the ballots are being prepared.
  • Candidates have gotten their videos sent in and they should be available today on our region website: SoroptimistSNR.org. I am so proud of all of our candidates for doing this. I’ve noticed how many of the next generation are very comfortable in front of the camera, but many of us in my generation are not, so I’m proud of each of our candidates for doing this critical step so you can all get to meet them! Please view the videos and let your club President and delegates know how you would like them to vote!
  • Our Target date for getting Ballots out to our delegates is still April 6, with voting closing on April 20.

Thank you all for making this go smoothly!

Conference:  As you probably saw in the last eblast, we won’t know if the Atlantis can accommodate a combined Conference/Soroptimist Development Retreat July 10-12 until they reopen on April 17 (if they are allowed to open then, as this is so fluid of a situation). So bear with us on whether Conference will happen in July. You’ll know as soon as we know!! Of course, we all realize this is still a moving target, so stand by!!!

YOU:   Most importantly, please take care of YOU! We are all members of this organization because we love our mission, but also it’s because of the many friends we make and social interactions that we have on a regular basis. Isolation can be really difficult and can cause unexpected reactions! Take inventory of your emotions and see if you need to take some action to change your perspective. I recently went to a Rachel Hollis RISE Convention. Many things we talked about there can apply to this time in our history and how to take care of yourself.
#1 -  Move your body, change your mind – get up wherever you are right now and jump up and down, move your arms, wiggle your hips for 10 seconds. Yes, you will feel silly, but how do you feel when you are done? 10 seconds won’t hurt you too bad, but it really does set a new intention in your brain, doesn’t it? Do you feel energized?
#2 -  Play music you love, that lifts your spirit and heart! Dance to it if you can!
#3 -  Try to watch only enough news to be informed. But watching too much can lead to Fear and Sadness and we need to try to shift that to Hope and Healing. We will get through this together. (See the article below about Truckee Meadows club and what they are doing to raise hope, while in isolation!)

The new normal of ‘staying home’ can have some unexpected consequences and feelings! Do what you can to keep your perspective positive. “We don’t see the world as IT is, we see it how WE are.” Our lens tells our story and we have control over that. Look for the silver lining, i.e. forcing us to better use technology for meetings, yoga classes, guided meditations, etc. Lastly, love yourself enough to take care of yourself so that we can be strong as a group to help more women and girls become women with vision!!

Miss you all!

Membership Message
We are now in, for us, uncharted waters…our life is very different. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you to remain healthy and to maintain a positive attitude in all that we may face.

Perhaps this is a perfect time for us to reflect on just how much our Soroptimist Sisters and our Soroptimist Mission mean in our lives…and, how we will be ready to come back to meetings and events with invigorated passion to move forward with a new appreciation for one another.

Our membership activities have pretty much come to a halt. Visits I had planned have been postponed. Working on chartering 2 new clubs is also affected but we will be back on it as soon as possible for both Henderson and Oroville.

Be thinking of something unique and meaningful you would like to contribute to a Soroptimist recruitment event for your club. You will have an opportunity to share at my Membership workshop at Conference. Look forward to seeing you then :)

Hands-On Projects
It’s time to create or renew Hands-On Projects!

The Giving Committee is taking applications for local projects that benefit women and girls in our community.

If you are interested in proposing a local Hands-On Project for our club, use the attached form to nominate a new project or renew an existing one.

This is a great way to complement Soroptimist financial support with member energy to fulfill our mission and the mission of the organization you nominate.

Please contact Carol Burr cburr@csuchico.edu or Kim Huber kim.n.huber@gmail.com if you have questions.
April Member of the Month
is Katie Salcido
My family moved to Chico in 1972 (I was 2 years old). I was fortunate to grow up in Chico with my older sister and brother. Bidwell Park was my playground as a child. I recall having multiple swimming holes and forts scattered along the creek on the north side of lower park.

My first job was delivering the daily newspaper after school from my bike. When I turned 15 ½ I was hired to bus tables at La Comida, a workplace and time I look back on with great memories.

I attended Butte College and Chico State from 1987-1997, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. While finishing up my undergraduate degree at Chico State I worked part-time at UPS. Since graduating, I have held a myriad of professional positions that range from UPS sales executive, bank manager, Chico State Financial Aid Analyst, to my current position as a community partnership liaison in my role as the Butte and Lassen Counties Partnership Specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2020 Census.

In May 2019 I earned my Master in Public Administration, officially becoming a Jill of many trades and a master of one. This past October I accepted a position with the US Census Bureau. In my current role I am able to unite my passion for community involvement with my desire to ensure that my community gets counted in this important decennial event.

When not working or going to school I enjoy running and hiking in Bidwell Park with friends, long dog walks, house projects with my partner of thirteen years, Holly Day, as well as biking, fishing, Pickleball, and gardening. I also enjoy dark coffee, hoppy beer, and great company. I look forward to becoming more involved in Soroptimist with you all!

Congratulations Katie for being our Member of the Month!
As you may have suspected, The 2020 Home and Garden Show will not be taking place this month as originally planned. Instead, it has been rescheduled to the new dates of July 25 and July 26 . Our obligation and schedule will remain the same, however we will start over with a new sign-up genius. We realize it's difficult to know what our plans will be in July, but please go ahead and sign up and each of us can easily change our chosen shift if needed at a later date.

Thank-you everyone!
