April 7, 2020
These readings for each day of Holy Week are intended to be read by people on their own, as personal reflections during Holy Week. They are inspired by stories from scripture and excerpted from the book Stages on the Way.
IT WAS ON TUESDAY
Matthew 22: 15-46

“It was on Tuesday that he let them have it.

If you had been there you would have thought that a union official was being taken to task by a group of mobsters. Or that the chair of a multinational corporation was being interrogated by left-wing activists posing as shareholders.

They wanted to know why and they wanted to know how.
They were the respectable men, the influential men, the establishment.

The questions they asked ranged from silly schoolgirl speculations about whether you would be a bigamist in heaven if you had married twice on earth, to what was the central rule of civilized behavior.

They knew the answers already…
Or so they thought, otherwise they would never have asked the questions.
And like most of us they were looking for an argument with no intention of a change of heart.

So he flailed them with his tongue…
Those who tried to look interested but never wanted to be committed.
And that was on Tuesday the he let them… let us… have it.”

MUSIC FROM ST. JOHN'S
As part of our outreach during this unsettling time, the Music Ministry has launched “Music From St. John’s,” a series of video performances by local musicians. This is an effort to continue to provide beautiful music to our congregation and community, and also to provide work to local musicians who have been severely affected by cancelations. New videos will appear daily for the foreseeable future, and they are being created by Shea Perry. We hope you’ll enjoy and share the videos, and also consider making a donation to the New Mexico Musicians Relief Fund. The easiest way to view the videos is to go to the St. John’s Music Ministries Facebook page. Check back daily!
