Thank You for Reading Speedster!
By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster editor, [email protected]

Thank you for being a loyal Speedster reader. We produce this monthly e-newsletter for you, our AACA members. We view Speedster as our monthly opportunity to share with you information about things going on with the Club, Museum and Library. We share updates on member benefits, National Meets and Tours, new exhibits and events, unique automobilia finds, etc. We also love sharing our members' stories about their restoration projects and experiences with their beloved automobiles.

In order to send out Speedster each month and make sure that our more than 32,000 active email contacts receive it, we use an online tool called Constant Contact. Constant Contact is a web-based email marketing system that allows us to create Speedster and other informational emails and send them out to you without getting caught by those darn spam filters. Apparently, we do a pretty good job at it because we just received notification from Constant Contact that AACA has received an
All Star Award for 2015.

Every year, Constant Contact presents only 10% of its customers with this award. (They have over 600,000 customers, so I'd say that's a pretty big deal!) The award is based on high open and click-thru rates on the emails an organization sends out. To us here at AACA, the award represents our commitment to building better relationships with our audience and the standard of excellence we are committed to when it comes to communicating relevant information to our members.

Open Rate (percentage of people who open the emails)
National Average: 21.9%
AACA Average: 40.4%

Click Rate (percentage of people who click on at least one link)
National Average: 8.63%
AACA Average: 13.1%

We are very proud of this recognition, and thank YOU again for taking the time each month to read Speedster!!
AACA Membership Survey Coming Soon
By Lars Anderson, VP Membership, AACA Board of Directors, [email protected]

The AACA Membership Enhancement Committee would like to learn more about your experience with AACA. We will be sending you an email survey very soon (powered by SurveyMonkey). Please keep your eyes open for the survey to arrive in your inbox and take the time to respond. (We timed ourselves and it only took 75 seconds!) This survey is important and will provide valuable information to help us make AACA better for you.

Thank you in advance for taking the survey!

Don O'Reilly Collection Arrives at AACA Library & Research Center

Racing Enthusiasts Will Be Amazed By the Collection

Holy Cow Batman! A trailer truck load of literature has arrived at the AACA Library & Research Center in Hershey, PA! Yes, the completely full, double and triple stacked 54' commercial trailer was full of literature, films and ephemera mostly about the world of racing. This is the collection amassed by the former publisher of Speed Age, Don O'Reilly. The collection was donated to the library by a very good friend and supporter of AACA.

Don O'Reilly was a prolific writer, photographer and historian, which led him through a career of many assignments with NASCAR and magazines. Don practically invented the genre of writing about auto racing beyond the Indy 500. He brought stock car racing and his love for local race tracks to mainstream publications and had a lot to do with starting NASCAR on its way to such great heights today. For those who wish to know more about him, there is a definitive piece written about him by Charles B. Camp in the November/December 2011 issue of Vintage Motorsports.

O'Reilly must have had a big garage as he had collected a massive treasure of early magazines ranging from his own ventures to all the other popular race car magazines of the era. He also collected titles such as Popular Mechanics and Automotive News. Basically, if there was a story about the automobile industry or racing, he saved it! Voluminous photographs, home videos and other resources are being uncovered by the AACA Library staff. Every day is going to be a treasure hunt going through the 500+ boxes that arrived recently.

The Don O'Reilly Collection will be properly archived, digitized where appropriate and catalogued for future historians and fans to use. The AACA Library & Research Center is a 501 (C) (3) organization and is a free public library. With over 1,250,000 items in its holdings, three librarians with their master degrees and a purpose-built facility, the library is a great resource for the collector car hobby.

Visit www.aacalibrary.org for more information.

Tools You Can Use: Online AACA Member Roster

Did you know that the AACA Membership roster is online? As many of you know, we used to print membership rosters back in the day, but we found that within a few months those directories were already riddled with out-of-date information. Since late 2014, members have been able to go online to our website ( www.AACA.org), sign-in to the Members Area and use the Membership Lookup tool. Don't worry - your information can only be accessed by current AACA members because your membership number and pin are required.

You can use the online roster in a number of ways. The search feature allows you to find members by last name, city or state. You cannot print out an entire roster. We have chosen to start out this way and put a high degree of security into the site. The methodology we have used will thwart people from using the roster in inappropriate ways. We also do not include phone numbers or email addresses for the same reasons and to protect the personal data of our members.

While many have expressed an interest in having a roster listing cars, etc., we have heard the majority still do not want that type of information available online. So at this time, we will keep the roster information minimal and containing the exact same information as our previous printed rosters contained.

Remember the AACA roster is not available for any commercial purposes and is copyrighted by the Antique Automobile Club of America. It is available for our regions, chapters and members only.

Life Will Always Be Better in a Classic!
By Tony and Marisol Ventrice, Staten Island, NY, [email protected]

We believe in keeping the history and memory alive, and in passing it down to the next generation. Our motto has always been... Life will always be better in a classic!

Every time we attend a show, tour or special event with our 1922 Model T, we go all out. We have lots of props - Boardwalk Empire promotional materials, 1920s Prohibition liquor, different outfits from the '20s, etc. We want people to be transported back in time and enjoy every element of our classic and what it represents. We are usually a big hit and most people get a real kick out of the scene we create.

We won a trophy at the New Dorp High School Car Show in Staten Island, NY.

Last year, at Sacred Heart High School in Staten Island, we won our first BIG trophy - Scoutmaster Best Car Award! We were dressed in '20s Gatsby and Newsboy styles!

Images from the Library - Chrysler Goes to the NY World's Fair!
By Matthew Hocker, Assistant Librarian, [email protected]

When most people think of a world's fair, the 1939 New York World's Fair is often considered the most iconic. Auto manufacturers had a strong reputation at the New York World's Fair, including Chrysler. Thanks to a recent donation, we were able to add this unique map of Chrysler's pavilion. Visitors could watch a 3D movie about the promise of tomorrow, have a "talking" Plymouth answer their questions, among other things. We are very fortunate to have this unusual item in our collection.

Ray Evernham Named Honorary Chairman of the 2016 Elegance at Hershey

Three-time NASCAR champion crew chief and host of Velocity's hit series AmeriCarna, Ray Evernham has graciously accepted our invitation to be the Grand Marshal of the 2016 Elegance at Hershey. Evernham won three NASCAR Cup championships as Jeff Gordon's crew chief and has more than 40 years of experience in the automotive industry.

In accepting our invitation, Ray states "I am honored to be the Grand Marshal at The Elegance at Hershey. In just a few short years, The Elegance has become well-known in automotive circles. I'm excited to see the race cars on the hill and view the spectacular automotive works of art on the lawn of the prestigious Hotel Hershey. Hershey may be well-known for its chocolates, but those of us in the car game know it for its rich automotive tradition as well. I can't wait to be there!"

"Having Ray Evernham as our Grand Marshal is thrilling for The Elegance," says Steve Moskowitz of the Elegance Board. "We chose Ray not only for his great appreciation of fine automobiles and all forms of automobile racing, but because he is a "car guy" in every sense of the word. Ray is one of those people you instantly like and is the type of person we want to honor. We are most appreciative that he has taken time out of his busy schedule to join us for the weekend."

Ray's passion for automobiles was forged in his childhood days. Early on in his stellar career, Ray had aspirations of becoming a championship-winning driver. After working with world-class drivers in the International Race of Champions (IROC) series, he realized his success in the racing world was to be found not behind the wheel but in managing the drivers and owning teams that compete at the sport's highest levels. In 1992, Rick Hendrick afforded Ray the opportunity to crew chief for his #24 team and the then up-and-coming driver Jeff Gordon. Three NASCAR Cup championships and 47 Cup victories, including two Daytona 500s and the inaugural Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, are counted among his many laurels as a crew chief.

In 1999, Ray began a new challenge - team ownership. Evernham Motorsports became a reality when Daimler-Chrysler chose Evernham to spearhead Dodge's re-entry into NASCAR racing, and in less than 500 days, Ray developed a car, engine and parts distribution program for Dodge's entire NASCAR presence. With driver Bill Elliott, Ray won Dodge the 2001 Daytona 500 pole in their first Sprint Cup Series start in nearly 20 years.

Ray rejoined his friend, Rick Hendrick, in 2011 as a consultant to Hendrick Companies. In 2014, Ray returned to the competition side of NASCAR as a consultant to Hendrick Motorsports, where he serves as a trusted member of the executive management team and offers his expertise in several key areas of race operations. Ray was nominated for the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2015.

Ray is also an avid collector of all sorts of vehicles, ranging from classic Mopars to priceless vintage race cars. In 2012, Ray debuted as a car designer and builder at the world-renowned SEMA Show by revealing his For-Ply - a one-of-a-kind 1964 Plymouth Belvedere combining old school American style with modern NASCAR technology. Ray and his team of mechanics and specialty fabricators at Ray Evernham Enterprises have proven to be second to none.

In addition to fulfilling his duties at Hendrick Motorsports, Ray is a broadcast TV personality serving as a NASCAR racing analyst with NBCSN and hosting Velocity's hit TV series AmeriCarna, which he developed, co-owns and co-produces with his old friend Rick Hendrick. AmeriCarna allows Ray to reveal untold stories of the cars that have so heavily influenced American car culture. Ray also serves as a car insights analyst for Velocity and Discovery's live broadcasts of the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auctions.

Ray is an extremely active philanthropist through his Evernham Family - Racing for a Reason Foundation (EFRFAR) and IGNITE Community Center, which he founded in 2012 with the Autism Society of North Carolina, for young adults with high-functioning autism (HFA) or Asperger's Syndrome (AS) in Davidson, N.C. IGNITE is a project very close to Ray's heart because his young adult son, Ray J, has Asperger's Syndrome.

Come join us for this truly fantastic weekend!

The Elegance at Hershey, a 501 (C) (3) organization based in Hershey, PA, was established in 2010.
