Churchill Welcomes New Softball Coaches!
The Winston Churchill Lady Bulldogs Softball program has undergone quite a few changes since last year!  Taking over the program this year is Coach Andrew Sonnabend .  An AP Comparative Politics teacher at Whitman HS, and former softball co-head coach for BCC, Coach Sonnabend has been working hard in the offseason to build a program that truly unites all players from the JV to Varsity level.
Coach Cat Ardis Trouteaud , science teacher at Blair (transferring to Churchill fall 2019) and former collegiate softball player at Eckerd College, takes over the JV program and will also serve as the pitching coach to players on both squads.  Both coaches are members of the Churchill community.   Coach Sonnabend has 2 daughters at Cabin John (8 th ) and Bells Mill (5 th ) and Coach Trouteaud has 2 sons – WCHS (Fr), Bells Mill (4 th ) and a daughter at Bells Mill (1 st ).
Both coaches are excited to grow the sport of  fastpitch  in the Potomac area and to continue the success of the WCHS Softball program.
If you come out to a game, expect to see a lot of “fresh” faces!  Between the varsity and junior varsity programs, 14 freshmen are now in our Dawg Pack. But with 6 seniors returning, these young Bulldogs certainly have some great mentors to lead them!  Captains for this year’s varsity squad are seniors Anna Kim (P), Emma Gray (C) and Ryan Storch (1B) .
Softball is having a fundraiser!
Start off your Spring Break with dinner out at California Tortilla in Cabin John Shopping Center on Wednesday, April 17th, from 5pm-8pm. Just say "Bulldogs" when you order and a portion of the sales will go to WCHS Softball.
2 - Churchill Athletics Hall of Fame
Thank you to all of the Alumni and community members who sent in your nominations for the Hall of Fame. Please stay tuned for an announcement about our new class and our event honoring their induction.
Thank you also to everyone who bid on our vintage championship banners. The last batch of auction winners will receive their banners shortly. Not all of the banners were auctioned. We will reopen the auction later this year! Your Winston Churchill HS student-athletes appreciate your support and we hope your banner brings back great memories of what it means to the a Bulldog!

Baseball is having a Fundraiser
4 - Girls Lacrosse Opens With a Win
Girls lacrosse program is excited for its season which officially started with victories over Poolesville for both the JV and the varsity teams at home on March 26.  Heading into the first week of April the girls will face their season’s toughest competition in games against rivals Whitman and WJ. Thanks to all the parents who have generously donated for bagel breakfasts and post practice dinners. This is a very spirited squad and we look forward to a sensational season. 6 - Churchill Track Runs for the Children's Brain Tumor Foundation 5k on Sunday, April 7
Join the Churchill Track Team in RUN(ing) for Robert in the 2019 Children's Brain Tumor Foundation 5k on April 7th at the Sligo Creek Rec Center. Churchill Track participates in this fundraiser in memory of Robert McDermott. In the words of Coach Jacobson, " The reason we have chosen this charity run to support as a Churchill running family is because we lost one of our beloved Churchill distance runners to brain cancer last year; Robert McDermott graduated from Churchill in 2014 and ran for 4 years here at Churchill, he was the perfect example of what a Bulldog runner should be: a great teammate and friend, a positive role model, and one of the hardest working runners I have ever seen. Robert was not a gifted runner, but he gave 100% at every practice to become a better runner, he would run with the fastest guys on the team every day and even though he might not be able to keep up with them the whole run he got better by trying. He improved every year he ran.
Robert’s sister Julia also ran and jumped (and played soccer) at Churchill and his family was part of our running family. So we really want to give back by supporting this race and charity as much as we can. Please sign up to run/walk/volunteer and make sure to join the team “RUN For Robert” when you register. We want to give back to the McDermott family and our community; this race means SO much to them as they honor the memory of Robert, let’s show them our love."

Details and how to register can be found HERE.
7 - Boys Lacrosse Clinic a Success!
The boys lacrosse team held a clinic fundraiser on Saturday, March 30th after their winning game against BCC. It was truly awesome! The clinic participants, K-8th graders, and the lacrosse team alike had so much fun. There is no doubt that our players saw a lot of their younger selves in the little guys out there! What’s really neat is that the participants were not just from our feeder schools. Some were from the Northwest cluster, some will go to St. John’s, some are from St. Andrew’s, and other schools. A huge shoutout goes to Amy Pogorelc who organized this start to finish for us and to Coach Fritz who rolled up his sleeves and put in a long day that started with coaching the boys' team and continued hours later coaching our clinic participants, many of whom had never picked up a lacrosse stick before. In all, we had about 40 participants out there learning from our players and perhaps finding their new favorite sport!

It was a really special day--one that made our entire program proud and showed to all how special our school and our student athletes really are.
