Voting for Open Membership Starts April 7
|
|
If you still have questions about the Bylaw change in regards to opening membership to all, refer to the email of March 29 or look again at the AAUW National website. Here you will find a newly added "AAUW Member Testimonials" video which features 50 year and 60 year members and a younger member talking about the change. (To watch scroll down to New Resource: AAUW Member Testimonials.)
Be on the lookout for a postcard that you can put on your refrigerator or some prominent place to help you to remember to vote.

One example of why support by foundations is important to AAUW
A major focus of AAUW is Research and Data. AAUW's new research report is "Factory Flaw: The Attrition and Retention of Women in Manufacturing." The report explores why women leave their jobs in manufacturing and what their experiences--with sexual harassment, unequal pay, unfair promotions, and juggling caregiving responsibilities--can tell us about how we can support women working in male-dominated industries. AAUW is grateful for the support of the Arconic Foundation which made this independent research possible.

On March 24, five Marin Branch members, Dottie Burk, Nancy Lubamersky, Sherene Chen, Sue Torres and Dianne Sheridan participated in the AAUW CA organized lobby day. Two days prior participants attended a Zoom training session. The focus was on three bills before the State Legislature, Senate Bills 62, Garment Worker Protection Act, and 373, Consumer Debt: economic abuse, and Assembly Bill 92 Child Care Family Fees. This bill is cosponsored by AAUW CA.
The day provided a chance to peek into the lobby process and hear from State Representatives. The morning was kicked off by Assembly Majority Leader Eloise Gomez Reyes, the author of AB 92, and Assembly Member Cristina Garcia, leader of the bipartisan California Legislative Women's Caucus.
Participants were assigned to meet in small groups on Zoom with legislators or their assistants to talk to them about the three bills. (During non-pandemic times these meetings would be held in person.) Dottie, Nancy and Sherene met with our own District 10 Assembly Member, Mark Levine, and his legislative aide, Jacqueline Anapolsky. Sue and Dianne were part of group that met with Jennifer Garcia, an aide to District 23 Assembly Member Jim Patterson, from the Fresno area.
