The Chrysalis

Current news from Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church
-- a place of safety --
Apri 1, 2018                 Vol. 19, Issue 2
  Greetings!

You have just received the April 1, 2018 Chrysalis - the newsletter of Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church. Please read through it for information concerning events during the coming month. Chrysalis will be published by the office staff, in this form, near the first of each month -- with special editions during the month (if/as warranted).

If you desire a printed copy of the Chrysalis you may print this email version (as with any email you receive). There will also be a few printed copies in the narthex for visitors, and for members of HRLC who do not have printing capabilities. [Note: This is an email newsletter and does not paginate the way a non-email newsletter might.]

Should you accidentally (or deliberately) delete this email, you may also find a link to the Chrysalis on our web site (www.hrlcsj.org). Go to the Member "Home" tab, then the "Communication" tab, and then click on "Newsletter" to find the month you are seeking.
News from The Closet
The Closet at HRLC Needs You!

The Closet is running low on funds. You can help with a purchase of these items: toothpaste, toothbrushes, liquid body soap, women’s and men’s deodorant, hand or body lotion, lip balm and razors. These are the items that “sell out” each month.

In 2017, The closet served 246 adults with a hygiene kit and new underwear and socks. The average cost per person was $11.80. Average cost per month was $290.30. Organizers for The Closet considered ways to reduce costs and these ideas will be tested this year. On the horizon is greater coordination with other churches.

Your contribution (monetary donation or purchase of specific items) goes a long way to helping people that come to HRLC for basic supplies that help with health and hygiene. Thank you for considering The Closet the next time you shop.

Please contact Leslie with any questions.

Excalibur , or  Caliburn , is the  legendary sword  of  King Arthur , sometimes also  attributed with magical powers  or associated with the rightful  sovereignty  of Britain. Sometimes Excalibur and the Sword in the Stone (the proof of Arthur's lineage) are said to be the same weapon, but in most versions they are considered separate.

Christmas Gift Ministry
Christmas seems far away but it’s not too soon to start making preparations for our Christmas Gift Ministry. Offerings for this ministry are taken on the first Sundays in April & October. Once again the Christmas Gift Task Force is making plans to give 4 or 5 needy families from one of our local school districts a Christmas to remember and we are asking for your help.

These families struggle to just provide the basics and they will not have much of a Christmas unless we help them. We will be contacting the school district in September to get specific information about the families we will sponsor. Concentrating on household items and grocery staples has worked very well for the past several years, so we will continue that for 2018. The children will still each get a book, a toy and a set of clothes, and we will provide family games and activities they can all do together. The presents that we have provided for the past several years were very greatly appreciated by both the families and the school district, and the homeless liaison is very happy that we are going to continue this ministry.

The current members of this task force are Marcia Freesemann, Lisa Paulsen & Leslie Stobbe. If you would like to participate in this ministry please call Marcia Freesemann at (408) 270-5722 or e-mail [email protected] . There will be a task force meeting in mid to late September and we will let everyone know when the exact date and time have been scheduled.

Please consider making a generous contribution to this ministry. What you give may be the only thing they receive for the holidays. Thank you for helping to make a Merry Christmas for these families!

Not the kingdom of death

Christ is risen!
We give thanks for the gift of Easter
that runs beyond our explanations,
beyond our categories of reason,
even more, beyond the sinking sense of our own lives.
We know about the powers of death
powers that persist among us,
powers that drive us from you, and
from our neighbor, and
from our best selves.
We know about the powers of fear and greed and anxiety,
and brutality and certitude.
powers before which we are helpless.
And then you ... you at dawn, unquenched,
you in the darkness,
you on Saturday,
you who breaks the world to joy.
Yours is the kingdom ... not the kingdom of death,
Yours is the power ... not the power of death,
Yours is the glory ... not the glory of death.
Yours ... You ... and we give thanks
for the newness beyond our achieving.
Amen.
