The City of Greater Sudbury – News and Updates, April 2025

A Message from the Mayor

April Update

Spring is officially here, and with it comes a renewed sense of energy and opportunity for our city. As the weather warms, I encourage everyone to take advantage of all that Greater Sudbury has to offer whether it’s exploring our beautiful trails, supporting local businesses, or enjoying our vibrant arts and culture scene.

At the end of March, I had the opportunity to speak at the Canadian Club about Greater Sudbury’s important role in Canada’s critical minerals future. With global demand for these resources expected to grow by 500% by 2050, we can’t afford to simply keep shipping our raw materials south of the border. We must refine, process, and add value here at home creating jobs, attracting investment, and strengthening Canada’s economic sovereignty.

Our city is uniquely positioned to lead this shift. We have the land, the talent and over a century of mineral processing expertise, along with strong partnerships with our Indigenous communities. Now is the time to invest, innovate and ensure Canada leads in the industries of tomorrow. If you missed my speech, I invite you to watch it here: youtu.be/gbSGhSAhyrU?si=s1ij_DhH8_GtK1YI.

While in Toronto, I also sat down with Premier Ford to discuss the opportunity for Greater Sudbury to play a major role in Ontario’s critical minerals strategy and the development of a complete battery electric vehicle supply chain. This is an exciting time for our city, and I look forward to continuing these conversations as we position Greater Sudbury as a leader in this evolving sector. Later this month, I’ll also be embarking on a trade mission to South Korea and Japan, where I’ll be meeting with global industry leaders and investors. I look forward to sharing updates with you as we work to bring new opportunities home to Greater Sudbury.

Thank you for your continued engagement and passion for our city. The best is yet to come!

Mayor Paul Lefebvre

Animal of the Month

Meet Lily!

A stunning Siberian Husky/Akita mix with a heart full of love and energy! Though shy at first, once she warms up, Lily is a playful bundle of joy. She’ll keep you entertained for hours—whether she’s playing with toys, exploring or running around. Lily would thrive in active homes but is also happy to settle down for some quiet time. Perfect for families or individuals looking for a fun, loving companion!

Lily is good with other dogs and cats, so she would be fine in a multi-pet household. However, due to her high energy and tendency to get a little jumpy, she’d be best suited for a home with older kids who can handle her excitement.

If interested in Lily please call us at 705-694-7387 or apply online.

Mattress Recycling

Effective April 1, 2025, discarded mattresses in Greater Sudbury will be recycled instead of filling up the landfill. This new initiative will divert mattresses, box springs and futon mattresses collected at the roadside and dropped off at all three landfill sites and the Walden Small Vehicle Transfer Station for recycling.

Why the change? Mattresses are large and bulky and take up too much space in the City’s landfills. They are hard to compact, resulting in reduced landfill lifespan. Metal springs in these items can also damage landfill equipment, leading to costly repairs and downtime.

How will this affect you? There will be no change to how residents place these items at the roadside. Eligible households can continue to make a request for roadside collection on the WasteWise App, online or by calling 311. Mattresses, box springs and futon mattresses will be collected by a separate collection vehicle and set aside at the landfill(s) for diversion. Residents dropping off these items at the landfill will be directed to the mattress diversion area.
