Our new mural at Croydon Woods was a community project that involved neighbors and local high school artists.

Earlier this month, Heritage Conservancy unveiled a colorful new mural highlighting the biodiversity and hiking appeal of Croydon Woods Nature Preserve. The work is a collaboration with student artists from nearby Truman High School and features plant and animal species from the woods. It is part of place-making efforts aimed at connecting the community with nature.

“We have worked with the community to remove over 20,000 pounds of trash,” said Heritage Conservancy’s CEO Bill Kunze at the unveiling. “In partnership with the community, we have worked hard to turn this into a place that can love nature again and also a place that people can love.”

One of our newest conserved properties holds an arts retreat center.

We have recently completed the preservation of the George - Little Pond Arts Retreat Property in Moore Township, Northampton County, PA. Heritage Conservancy will serve as the Holder with Moore Township serving as the Co-Holder of a conservation easement that preserves 29.3 acres that is adjacent to a 28.71 acre farm protected through Northampton County's Farmland Preservation Program. 

This property includes a cultural center and meeting place that hosts artists, and serves as a venue for the arts, spirituality, and immersion in the natural environment. The land includes extensive wildlife habitat and open space that contribute to the rural character of the area. It is part of our growing impact in Northampton County.

Preservation of this property ensures the protection of several natural habitats, including tributary headwaters of the East Branch Monocacy Creek (a designated High Quality - Cold Water Fishery stream), important farmland, and important natural features such as Prime Farmland Soils, steep slopes, riparian woodlands, and successional meadows and shrublands.

We have lost almost 3 billion birds since 1970 in North America alone. There are many causes, but habitat loss and degradation are chief among them. The development of land into acres of lawns with exotic and invasive plants has destroyed habitats in many ecosystems across North America, reducing the bird populations that previously relied on those properties for food and shelter.

William Mercer's garden statuary and fountains were inspired by his travels.

It's garden season – a good time to look to William Mercer's artistic garden creations for inspiration. He produced and sold numerous planters, benches, fountains, and birdbaths in the late 19th and early 20th century. He kept a catalog of his designs to showcase the types of works he could create.

William's designs were inspired by some of the parks and gardens he visited in Europe. You can see numerous examples of his work on the grounds of Aldie Mansion, though some, like the front fountain, are reproductions.

Earlier this month, WeConservePA hosted its annual Pennsylvania Land Conservation Conference in Bethlehem. The gathering drew people from across the state, including much of Heritage Conservancy's staff, to discuss and learn about land conservation and emerging issues and ideas in the field.

Heritage Conservancy was among the host sponsors, and our Vice President, Kris Kern, spoke on the topic of condemnation on conserved lands. Conservation Easement Steward Sebastian Harris helped lead a Mobile Seminar in Kittatinny Ridge and the Minsi Lake Greenway Corridor. And Conservation Easement Steward Katie Toner spoke on enhancing conservation values on land that is protected by easements.
