April Adoptions

Thanks to your incredible support, we celebrated 91 adoptions this month! Each one represents a life changed and a new beginning for a pet in need. We’re so grateful to our adopters, fosters, volunteers, and donors who make this lifesaving work possible. As we look ahead to May, we’re excited for even more opportunities to connect animals with loving homes, especially with events like Empty the Shelters. We can’t wait to see what we accomplish together next! 

April Shelter Snapshot

We’re proud to partner with BISSELL Pet Foundation for the 10th anniversary of Empty the Shelters! From May 1–17, all dog and cat adoptions at Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society are just $50.

This nationwide event has already helped nearly 400,000 pets find loving homes, and we’re excited to help even more animals start their next chapter right here in our community. Your new best friend is waiting! 

Kitten season is here, and with it comes an overwhelming number of vulnerable kittens in need of care. Right now, our greatest need is for fosters willing to take in pregnant cats and moms with their babies. These families need a quiet, safe place to give birth and raise their kittens outside of the shelter. As intake numbers rise, space is quickly becoming limited, and foster homes are critical to saving lives. By opening your home, you provide a low-stress environment where moms can care for their kittens and little ones can grow strong enough for adoption, all while freeing up shelter space for other animals in need. Whether you can help for a few weeks or longer, your support makes an immediate, life-saving impact!

They even treated us to Dough Haus! Your kindness and support make a real difference for the animals and the families who welcome them home. We are so grateful!

Cristy chose to celebrate her 10th birthday in the most amazing way, by giving back to the animals at GMHS! After hosting a table at Southern States, Cristy was so excited to personally deliver her birthday donations to help pets in need. What an incredible act of kindness and generosity!

Shelter Pet Spotlight - Hazel

Hazel is a sweet Doodle mix with a heart as soft as her curls. After being surrendered due to her previous family moving, she spent some time in foster care where her true personality began to shine. Hazel is best described as friendly, loving, and wonderfully playful. She’s the kind of dog who greets everyone like an old friend and brings warmth wherever she goes!

She has been working hard on her health, too. Hazel has a history of skin allergies, but with proper care and a special diet, her fur is growing back beautifully and she’s feeling better every day. She will need to continue her current diet until a veterinarian advises otherwise, but she’s already showing just how resilient she is.



Hazel is looking for a home that’s the best fit for her needs, one where she’ll be cherished, understood, and given the care she deserves. In return, she promises endless affection, joyful playtime, and a loyal companionship that will make every day a little brighter!
