April 2025 Critter Chronicles

Our Favorite Feel-Good Story of the Month

This month we celebrated a truly special adoption! Dogs like Cupid may wait a little longer for their forever family, but your compassion proves that every dog deserves a second chance. Thank you for seeing the beauty in Cupid and giving the kind of love that truly changes lives.

April Adoptions

Thanks to our amazing community of adopters, volunteers, and supporters, 40 pets found loving forever homes this April and 63 pets were transferred to adoption-guaranteed partners through our Highway to Home program! Every wag, purr, and happy tail is a reminder of the impact we can make together. Let's keep the momentum going—there are still more furry friends waiting for their chance at love!

April Shelter Snapshot

The generous support of staff, volunteers, and donors enables GMHS to provide daily care, cover special medical needs, foster animals in homes as needed, and arrange transportation to adoption-guaranteed partners.

GMHS broke ground this month on a new building project, The Williams Center, which will serve as an additional wing to the existing shelter.

The Williams Center will not only enhance our ability to connect people and pets, “but also serve as a welcoming space for learning, collaboration and celebration,” said Tina Leone, chief executive officer of GMHS, during the April 17 groundbreaking.

Pet parenting classes, behavior and agility training for GMHS pets, yoga classes and cuddle sessions with shelter animals, children’s camps, community events and more are planned for the new space. The center will also provide temporary shelter for people and their pets during hurricanes and other crises.

Initial funding for the project was provided by The Dean and Cam Williams Foundation.

“Dean and Cam believed deeply in the power of the Gloucester community and recognized the importance of civic contribution,” said Diane Johnson, president of The Dean and Cam Williams Foundation. “The center embodies their legacy—a place where people, pets and community come together. We are honored to see their vision taking shape in such a meaningful way.”

GMHS is undergoing a fundraising campaign to support the construction. If $1 million is raised for the project, The Dean and Cam Williams Foundation has pledged a matching $1 million grant. To learn more and get involved, visit gmhumanesociety.org/donate.

Shelter Pet Spotlight - Jameson

Meet Jameson, the barely-there furball with a whole lot of love! Jameson is a four-year-old-cat with a unique look and an even more unique personality. With his mysterious matches of missing fur (we promise he is healthy - the hair loss is just part of his charm!), Jameson turns heads wherever he goes. He may not be your typical fluffy feline, but he makes up for it with affection. Jameson gets along well with people and enjoys a good window perch to watch the world go by. Ready to give this special boy a forever home? Jameson is waiting to show you that beauty comes in all forms, especially the kind that purrs.
