COMMANDER'S CORNER
Matthew Kampainen, DAV WI Commander

See you at the State Convention!

Hello, DAV Wisconsin!

April has been a great month; some of us were able to go to the National Commanders testimonial. It was a fantastic experience, and if you ever have the opportunity to go to one, I recommend it.

This month has been a busy month, with district meetings happening almost every weekend. Each district meeting has been a learning experience for everyone.

The Department is getting ready for the state convention on June 9-11, 2022, at the Green Bay Radisson Hotel & Conference Center. There are a couple of officers running for higher office and some new candidates seeking state office. However, there are still some positions we need candidates to run for, so if you are willing to learn and lead, then put your name in the running.

If you decide to run for a position, then make sure to get your bio into the State Headquarters by May 15th. Also do not forget to register for the Convention, as with everything else in the world our registration price is now $40 and dinner price is $40. Do not be late because there is a late registration fee.

In May everyone will be busy with Chapter elections or installations. Remember, your Officer Election Reports need to be submitted no later than 10 days after installation.

I hope everyone had a great Easter weekend for those who celebrate it and for everyone else a great holiday weekend.

Do not forget that our National Commander Andy Marshall is coming to our convention.

See you in June at the State Convention!

State Convention: Meet DAV National Commander Andy Marshall

Its April and the continuation of busy times. We are well into District meeting with only one (5th District) to complete. Not all Chapters of a District have been present and I think attendance by members could be better. One item that is a problem, when asking the attendee’s how many read the Newsletter very few hands are raised. That is disappointing, we publish that so that we may keep the department members aware of DAV activities from National down to the Chapter level. I encourage all to read the newsletter and should you have questions or concerns let us know.

Convention planning is well under way. By now you have received information on registration, banquet, delegates, agenda, and information on room block we have at the Green Bay Radisson Hotel & Conference Center. Block of rooms will be released on 17 May, so get your reservations made. They are giving us a great rate that includes breakfast each day your there. Registration and Banquet fees are due by 17 May, or a five-dollar fee will be added to each.

Currently, we are projecting at least a need for a Judge Advocate (JA) and three Junior Vice Commanders (JVC). For the positions of Commander, Senior Vice Commander, and Benefits Protection Team Leader, we do have individuals in line seeking those positions. Even though we have members seeking the positions, any department member in good standing can run for any department position. Now’s the time for anyone wishing to be more involved in Department leadership and decision making to step up.

We do ask that anyone running for office submit a Bio/Resume’ that can be published in our Convention Book. Simply state why your running, which position, and provide background information. Keep the document to one page and submit to State Headquarters.

Make sure to register as a Delegate, which allows you to vote and participate at the convention. You must have the signature of your Commander and Adjutant on the Delegate slip.

I do want to announce that I will be stepping down as the Department Adjutant after this year’s convention. I have truly enjoyed working with everyone as your Adjutant and will continue to be a part of the DAV and this department. By announcing my decision now, it provides time for anyone interested in the position to make it known to headquarters. This needs to be done prior to the Convention. Our next Commander will appoint the next Adjutant, subject to approval by the Department Executive Committee, and needs to know those desiring to serve. This will allow him and the Committee to make a better decision.

Our National Commander Andy Marshall will be in attendance this year. He will also be present for Commander Kempainen’s Hospitality event on Thursday evening. What a great time to come out and meet Commander Marshall. Would be great to have all our chapters represented at the Convention. Look forward to seeing you there!
