“Shelter in Place” Must Mean Keeping Families Safe at Home During COVID-19
Yachad works to insure that homes are safe and healthy for families. Especially now there is grave concern that our clients’ homes may be threatening their health even more than ever as people need to “shelter-in-place.” Yachad is doing what it can to mitigate some of these concerns.

Yachad is working with the DC government, healthcare and nonprofit partners across the region to implement a Healthy Housing response effort to deliver education, assessment and hazard prevention supplies to our most vulnerable families. Through our virtual home visits in partnership with Children’s National and BreatheEasy, we are working to ensure the safety of our staff and clients while meeting our mission to protect those who are most in need and yet have the least resources to handle housing challenges posed by this crisis
Actions We Are Taking
  • Launching a Yachad web page devoted to the resources focusing on “how-to” information about remediating simple health triggers in homes.

  • Offering remote learning opportunities for our volunteers, particularly HandyMensch and homeowners.

  • Continuing our virtual home visits with Children’s National to help identify hazards and provide advice to protect families from harm.

  • Supporting our partner, BreatheEasy’s efforts to deliver (when possible) Healthy Housing Supply Kits to families most at risk. Based on need, the kits may include some or all of the following:

  • HEPA Vacuums
  • Environmentally friendly cleaning supplies
  • Furnace Filters
  • Mattress and Pillow Covers
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Supplies

Yachad staff are working hard to adapt our direct service work to meet the changing needs of our most vulnerable children and families during this time. We heartily thank all of our Sukkot in Spring and Neighbor to Neighbor House Sponsors who generously agreed to extend their financial and in-kind support for our work until summer or fall. And a huge thank you to all of our current funders and donors who sent notes of support, encouragement and donations, recognizing the importance of Yachad’s work.

The families we serve need all of us more than ever. Yachad is committed to ensuring that “sheltering at home” isn’t as big a threat as COVID-19.

Be well and stay safe,
