April is Autism Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month
Here are some of the things Encompass will be doing this month to raise awareness of these two causes:
Healthy foundations can make huge differences in children's lives.
Child abuse prevention:
"Children who are raised in supportive and stable environments are more academically and financially successful, and great childhoods help children grow into productive, contributing adults who help their community, and our country, be prosperous and competitive in the global economy."
- Prevent Child Abuse America
Early intervention in treating autism:
"A treatment method or an educational method that will work for one child may not work for another child. The one common denominator for all of the young children is that early intervention does work, and it seems to improve the prognosis."
- Temple Grandin, autism advocate

Parent-Child Home Program Brings Imaginations to Life
In the Encompass Parent-Child Home Program, one of the books our home visitors share with families is
The Birthday Box
, the story of a little boy who receives a puppy in a large box for his birthday. He is excited about the box, and he and his puppy have many adventures pretending it is a plane, a boat, a robot, and anything else he can imagine.
To bring the story to life, our home visitors present each child with a large box of their own. They are delighted to decorate it and play in it, just like the boy in the story, as shown in the picture of Daylin above.

Speech-Language Pathology Welcomes Interns
This week, the Encompass Speech-Language Pathology team welcomed two new second year graduate student interns from the University of Washington.
Hannah Nye will be interning in our Early Intervention and Pediatric Clinic therapy programs until her graduation in August. After graduating, she plans to work with children in a school or private setting.
Breanne Toney is completing a 10 week internship through the end of May. Breanne is passionate about using her Spanish skills in therapy as well as gaining more experience in craniofacial disorders, feeding, and medically complex cases.

Rain Can't Dampen Spirits on Preschool Trip to the Zoo
On March 29th, the Encompass preschool classes piled onto buses and headed to the Woodland Park Zoo.
Kids and their chaperones were allowed to explore the
African Savanna, Rainforest, and the Northern Tundra to their heart's desire. Some of their favorite animals to watch were the komodo dragon and the river otters.
Mackenzie is shown here sitting atop the zoo's life-size hippopotamus statue.
