On March 19th, the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber had its 3rd 5pm Connect of the year sponsored by La Quinta by Wyndham and The Rocket WOKH & WBRT. The chamber and its members gathered for networking, games, and great food thank you Uncle Spoony’s Sports Bar & Kitchen.

Young Leaders

March 19th was an amazing day spent with some incredible young leaders! We started the day with an insightful tour of 5K Logistics, LLC, where we learned about the logistics industry and how operations are kept running smoothly. Then, we visited Town & Country Bank and Trust Co., connecting with professionals and diving into the world of banking and finance. We ended the day with a delicious lunch at Zaxby’s!

National Civics Bee

On March 22nd, the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber held its third annual National Civics Bee at Thomas Nelson High School. 17 middle school students from across the Commonwealth gathered to test their civics knowledge to win the top prize of $500 dollars and for the chance to compete in the statewide competition held later this year at the Kentucky State Fair.

The students competed in two rounds of questioning, with the top five with the most points advancing into round three. Andy B., Jaclyn H., Joel H., Piper T., and Saanvi K. were the top five finalists. The top five finalists gave a brief presentation on their essay topic with the judges, and Saanvi impressed the judges the most winning her first place in the competition. In addition to Saanvi’s win, Piper took home second place and $250 dollars, and Joel was awarded third place taking home the prize of $150 dollars. On behalf of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, and the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber congratulations and a job well done!

We want to acknowledge the Nelson County Public Library and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation for sponsoring this event and trusting us to help pilot this program. We want to thank the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce for their support and encouragement. We look forward to sending these three amazing individuals to the State event competition, where they will compete again for a place on the national stage in Washington DC this November.

We would like to thank our elected officials: State Representative Candy Massaroni, Nelson County Judge-Executive- Tim Hutchins, and Field Representative for United States Congressman Brett Guthrie- James Victery for their support.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson High School for the incredible hospitality. Thank you to Grizzly Media for the photography. Lastly, thank you to our judges, Doug Brink, Rita Koontz, Robert Cecil and the volunteers that have been a tremendous help!

Spotlight of the Month

New Pioneers for a Sustainable Future

New Pioneers for a Sustainable Future is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a mission to promote sustainability in rural communities throughout Nelson, Marion, and Washington counties to ensure a healthy future for all. We believe that living sustainably – within the environmental limits of our natural world – is the key to a healthy future for all: Ourselves, our communities, and all life on Earth. We seek to build and foster thriving and resilient communities; embracing environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic vitality.

To meet these goals, New Pioneers educates local communities, demonstrates sustainable living practices alongside a network of members, and advocates for strategies to support healthy ecosystems. We celebrate 20 years of building a sustainability coalition throughout central Kentucky this year!

In 2024 alone, we reached over 1,700 individuals (majority youth and families) with environmental education and invested $83,000 in local environmental literacy. This year, we’re excited to host our upcoming Springfield Green Festival on April 26 and our first summer camp, “Where the Wild Things Are”, June 23-27. Visit our website at https://newpioneers.org/ to learn more about our programs and get involved! We specifically have more summer camp openings for youth ages 6-12, and we’re looking for volunteers and paid staff to support camp.

Like many nonprofits, we rely on the generosity of local businesses, community partners, and our members to support our free educational programs and community outreach. We invite you to learn more about us – and partner in our work by making a gift – today at https://newpioneers.org/join-us/!
