April is Volunteer Appreciation Month! TCOA is especially proud to work with hundreds of volunteers each day. Volunteers deliver meals with the Meals on Wheels Program; help greet and serve meals at Congregate Dining Sites; make Friendly Reassurance phone calls to older adult clients; facilitate health and wellness workshops; provide Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) counseling; complete administrative tasks; and serve as Consortium Board members, Advisory Council members, and Friends for Independence fundraising volunteers. We cannot do this work alone, and truly appreciate each and every volunteer who lends their time and talents.

Purple and green text saying "From Tri-County Office on Aging, thank you to our volunteers. Happy national volunteer month."

April Volunteer Spotlight: Paulette Dunbar

Please join us in congratulating Paulette, this month's Volunteer Spotlight! Paulette volunteers with the Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) helping individuals to understand Medicare & Medicaid, enroll in Medicare prescription drug coverage, review supplemental insurance needs, apply for Medicaid or Medicare Savings programs, and provide information to help identify and report fraud, abuse or scams.

In Paulette's words: "I am a retiree from a fulfilling life-long career working for local and state public health agencies supporting public health programs for the maternal child health population. When it became time for me to plan for health care insurance coverage for myself once I retired, I was amazed at how complicated it was. While looking for information to understand Medicare and how to coordinate with my employer’s health care coverage, I became aware of the State Health Insurance Assistance Program and the volunteers that participate in providing support.

So, it became a part of my retirement plan to become a volunteer to help others make an appropriate choice upon their retirement. These months of training have been interesting to see the assistance that is provided to people within an array of situations. It is heartwarming to see the gratitude people have for the support and assistance that is provided. I hope to become competent enough to be able to offer such assistance."
