 Understanding the Bible
This Friday-night/Saturday (or online) course focuses on the historical timeline of biblical events, the development of the canon, an dthe challenges of interpretation. The use of commentaries and study Bibles is discussed as well as responsible use of the scripture in preaching and teaching. The class is prerequisite for those entering the Certificate in Pastoral Ministry program, but other laity are welcome and encouraged to attend. |
Instructor: Rev. Fran Schnarre, is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and is the Director of Educational Ministries at Missouri School of Religion. She is also part-time pastor of Granville Christian Church near Paris, MO. Fran lives with her husband, Brian, on a farm near Centralia, MO. They are the parents of four grown children and have three grandchildren.

This event will not repeat the contents of Marva's book of the same name (but why waste a good title!). Rather, Dr. Dawn, who is a good authority on caring for those who suffer (both from the inside and outside), will speak to practical and theological questions about attending to, and caring for, those who suffer in spiritual, physical, and emotional ways."
Dr. Marva Dawn, Internationally renowned theologian, author, and educator, Dr. Marva J. Dawn serves as Teaching Fellow in Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Under Christians Equipped for Ministry (CEM), she has preached and taught at seminaries, clergy conferences, churches, assemblies, and universities throughout the United States and Canada and in Australia, China and Hong Kong, England, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Madagascar, Mexico, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Norway, Poland, Singapore, and Scotland.
A scholar with four masters degrees and a Ph.D. in Christian Ethics and the Scriptures from the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Dawn is also a popular preacher and speaker for people of all ages.
Marva and her husband Myron, a retired elementary school teacher, live in southwestern Washington State.
She is the author of numerous articles and over 20 books, several of which have won awards and\or been translated into Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, and other languages. Her books include:

 The Social and Global Mission of Your Congregation
May 17-19, 2012

Focusing on the prophetic role of pastors in challenging the congregation to claim its status as a faithful remnant of God's people called to deeds of justice and mercy in their local, national and global context. Practical dimensions of the church's social and global mission will be explored.
Rev. David Avery, graduated from William Jewel College in 1970. His final year of college was spent as a student at the University of Andhra, Andhra Pradesh, India. He spent four years in the U.S. Navy as a radioman (three and a half years assigned to a communication station in Ponce, Puerto Rico.) He received a second bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1976 and worked ten years as a reporter and editor in various newspapers and magazines in Missouri and Iowa. He received the call to ministry in 1986 and attended four years at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, IN. While there, he served as pastor of First Christian Church, Eaton, IN. Upon graduation he took a call to the Central Christian Church in Boone, IA. He served there seven years. In Boone, he also taught a basic course in philosophy (ethical problems) at Des Moines Area Community College (Boone Campus) for a couple of years. In January 1998, He became pastor of Community Christian Church, Jefferson City, MO. He and his wife, Suzan are the proud parents of three beautiful daughters, Sara, Kate and Laura. They also have two grandsons, Kaden and Brecklan, and two granddaughters, Garnet and Linden.

Missouri School of Religion presents:
 Online: History of the Christian Faith
May 15 thru July 10, 2012
Cost: $390
This historical survey follows the development of the church from its beginning to the contemporary period. The course will focus on the following: Early Christianity, Medieval Christianity, Reformation Christianity, Modern Christianity, and Contemporary Christianity. Particular emphasis will be given to the emergence, development and decline of Christendom.
Instructor: Rev. Dr. Thomas Minton, currently serves as Senior Pastor of Eminence Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Eminence, KY. Until recently he was with Disciples Christian Church, in Nevada, Missouri. Before that he served First Christian Church in Republic, Missouri. He holds degrees from Abilene Christian University and Asbury Theological Seminary in Biblical Studies, in World Mission and Evangelism, and in Missiology respectively.
Thomas has many years of experience in ministry including sixteen years in Switzerland and Germany as well as short-term missions in Holland, Austria, Kenya, the Philippines, Ecuador, and Mexico. Also, he served churches in Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, and Missouri. His goal in ministry is to encourage and build up the church as a spiritually vital, worshipping community of faith, "loving and serving from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth" (www.disciples.org/internal/vision/ ).
His spouse, the Rev. Barbara J. Minton, also an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was most recently the Senior Pastor of First Christian Church in El Dorado Springs, Missouri. Together they are the parents of a son and two daughters and have eight grandchildren.
