FILM SCREENING - FULLY AWAKE: BLACK MOUNTAIN COLLEGE
Hidden in the mountains of Western North Carolina, Black Mountain College (1933 - 1957) was an influential experiment in education that inspired and shaped twentieth century American art. FULLY AWAKE: BLACK MOUNTAIN COLLEGE is a documentary film that explores the college's progressive pedagogy and radical approach to arts education. Highly democratic and faculty-owned, the school promoted practical responsibilities and the creative arts as equally important components to intellectual development. During WWII, Black Mountain College was a haven for refugee European artists such as Josef and Anni Albers who arrived from the Bauhaus in Germany. Other BMC alumni included, Franz Kline, John Cage, Buckminster Fuller, Willem de Kooning, and Robert Rauschenberg. Fully Awake explores how the confluence of this diverse community came together to create a unique educational model.
TALK – JANE SLATER MARQUIS by KATIE HORAK
Title: “Jane Slater Marquis: Everything is Lovely, but Never Quite Like Black Mountain” The legacy of Black Mountain College (BMC) lives on through the work of the well-known artists and performers who studied and taught there during its 23-year history. Architectural Historian Katie Horak examines the life and work of Claremont artist Jane Slater Marquis who studied at BMC during the 1940s, the unique circumstances that brought her there, and the path she would chart as a productive, working artist.
Jane came to Claremont in 1966 when her husband Lucian took a position as political science professor at Pitzer College. Jane left her mark on Claremont and designed windows for Scripps College and many residences including the Barbara Beretich Estate where recently her work was rescued from certain demise by Claremont Heritage and returned to the family.
Katie Horak is an architectural historian and principal at Architectural Resources Group, an architecture and planning firm in Los Angeles that focuses on the historic built environment. In addition, Katie is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at USC, where she teaches graduate-level courses in historic site documentation in the Heritage Conservation program.
