Mule deer herd near Horton Lakes, April 2023 Photo: Alexa Flower

It's that time of year again! In spring, mule deer begin their annual migration from wintering on the Owens Valley floor, moving slowly up to Long Valley, and finally to their designated summer range in the High Sierra. The herds travel the same paths each year, creating a migration corridor.

Recap and Looking Forward

The National Forest Foundation grant allows the Bishop Climbing Rangers to participate in educational programs, organize stewardship projects, and more. Below is an update from Kara Flowers, Bishop Climbing Ranger:

"The soil we walk on tells stories about the land around us. How closely have you looked at the soil lately?

Kara paired up with Inyo County Office of Education to support the Eastern Sierra Watershed Project’s Archeology field trip for the Inyo County 4th graders at Fish Slough. The 4th graders explored Fish Slough’s natural history, learned about different soil types, plant communities, geologic time, and solved the case of the missing Pupfish! At the end of the day, every 4th grader went home with a free pass to visit federal public lands.

The Inyo County Office of Education does an amazing job creating fun and engaging activities, and the kids were SO MUCH FUN! Thank you for allowing us to collaborate, it was a pleasure to participate!

Receiving the National Forest Foundation grant has allowed us to expand the Climbing Ranger Program and work with kids from Inyo County to fuel the passion and excitement to be outside and explore public lands."
