Family Faith Challenge

May is dedicated to Mary. A family favorite Marian prayer for us is the Hail Holy Queen. Please join us as we pray a daily Hail Holy Queen this month.

Family Fit Challenge

MAY MOVES! The month of May brings us NATIONAL PE & SPORT WEEK (May 1-7) and ACES DAY (May 1). We are also honored to share a 2nd grade student’s initiative to create a flyer for Mrs. B (did this on his own), on how to MOVE IN MAY! Take a look at some of the suggested activities or pick your own, then share with your PE teachers how you’re MOVING IN MAY! 🙂

Your students will continue using Pietra Fitness throughout the year for our PE cool downs.

ART

Our kindergarteners, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are hard at work finishing up either their 2D or 3D Projects for the 2024 Arts In Bloom Art Show next month! This year's theme is… Yummy Food!! I don’t want to give too much away this month, so I will leave you with a picture to intrigue you and a reminder to put it on the calendar.

We invite you to come join us for the 2024 Arts In Bloom Art Show on Wednesday May 22nd from 3:30-6pm! All of your children have worked so hard and they can’t wait to see their artwork and sculptures displayed for friends and family to see! Here’s a sneak peek…

MUSIC

Kindergarten students are exploring pitch and performing simple ostinatos on xylophones. Students have been working on reading and playing simple patterns with quarter notes and beamed eighth notes. We will use our new skills to play simple accompaniment for the song Riding in a Buggy. Students are also learning a simple waltz to step to dance with a partner at the upcoming Kindergarten Cafe.

1st grade is exploring melodies and xylophones. We are practicing our rhythm reading as well as simple melodies on a staff. The students will be working towards playing songs with 2 parts on the xylophone using the Do, Re, Mi and Sol pitches.

2nd grade students are preparing to create their newest rhythm composition by dictating rhythms for songs and rhymes. The classes are practicing 2 and 3 part rounds and partner songs as a choir.

3rd grade students are reading notation written on the staff using simple patterns and familiar tunes. They are building on their decoding through both listening and reading resources. The students are developing study and practice skills at home through their recorder practice.

4th grade students continue their recorder studies as they play songs with five and six different notes. The young musicians are learning about the Beatles and treble clef note naming. The students have also learned a new song set to text from Matthew 7:7-8 "Ask and it shall be given, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened unto you."

5th grade students are expanding their melodic knowledge by reading melodies in the keys of F and G. They are developing their study and practice skills at home through their recorder practice. They are preparing for their next composition using skipping rhythms in 6/8 time.

BAND

5th grade band students have enjoyed the beautiful weather by playing outdoors. We even performed for Father Bill as he was walking back to the Rectory. Students have continued to improve on reading notes and key signatures as we prepare for our final concert of the year on May 15th. In the coming weeks, students will have a chance to create their own compositions.

RELIGION & CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Kindergarten – 3rd grade

Happy Easter! In the atrium, all of the children have joined in a celebration called the Liturgy of the Light. Resurrection is such a great mystery that a celebration is required if we are to really begin to grasp its meaning! The Church enters the season of Easter with the Liturgy of Light at the Easter Vigil. In the atrium we do this same celebration, though slightly modified so that the children can participate more fully and at a pace that is particularly suited to them. What is proclaimed in the Bible is lived in the liturgy. Helping the children to experience this reality offers them an opportunity to enjoy more fully the relationship they have with God and others. This is especially true in the Liturgy of Light. The moments of the celebration include; the blessing of the Paschal candle, the procession with the Paschal candle, listening to scripture, the sharing of the light, spontaneous prayer as well as singing. What a richness of signs for the children to enjoy!

The 4th graders learned about the tradition of building grottos and designed a grotto of their own.

We have begun our Beatitudes Unit. Each class the students will watch a fun video about the Beatitude, perform a skit, and read a fable about the beatitude.

Up next: the Life of Christ and the Ascension

5th graders are wrapping up the sacraments of initiation and will begin role playing the sacrament of healing, reconciliation and holy orders, I encourage the kids to continue to work on their Vatican projects. We are excited to see what they do!
