Join three of the West Coast's finest exponents of traditional music for a rare full-length concert: Dublin IR button accordion player Johnny B. Connolly, Carmel fiddle player John Weed, and Portland OR guitar wizard/vocalist Cary Novotny are uniting for a limited run of fall shows in the California Bay Area and Central Coast. The concert will intertwine driving sets of jigs and reels, rhythmic old-time tunes highlighting the interplay between squeezebox and fiddle, and Americana ballads that'll delight the soul. Seating for these events is limited.
Johnny B. Connolly, a Dublin-born master of Irish traditional music, gained early recognition in his hometown before joining the renowned ensemble Anam. Touring extensively, he eventually made his home in Portland, Oregon. Settling in Portland, Oregon, Johnny's friendship with legendary fiddler Kevin Burke led to a record deal with Green Linnet Records in 2001. His album "Bridgetown," a fusion of traditional Irish and French tunes, garnered widespread praise with guest appearances by Burke and production by guitarist Ged Foley.
Joining the esteemed Irish band Solas in 2014, Johnny showcased his exceptional talent on their latest CD, "All These Years." He has also toured and performed alongside notable artists such as Eammon McElholm, Kevin Burke, Nuala Kennedy, Tony Furtado, Aidan Brennan, and Casey Neill.
John Weed, fiddler for Molly's Revenge and New World String Project, has spent the last 30 years immersed in various fiddle styles. With an affinity for folk traditions, John's exploration has emphasized Irish, Scottish, Swedish, and Old-Time fiddle. While he holds a bachelor's degree in music from CSU Chico, the musical education that charted his path began through a long series of Irish sessions. There, he learned the nuance of aural passing of melodies and the tradition of conversing in a deeply musical manner. John's passion for the vital expressiveness of the session led to performing across the United States and internationally. In addition to being a full-time performer and instructor, John is currently on faculty at Palenke Arts, a multicultural arts organization in Seaside, California.
Cary Novotny was born in South Dakota. He studied classical guitar in Bowling Green, KY, where he was also influenced by country, folk, and bluegrass. Cary earned a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Portland and began a career as a professional guitarist, singer and songwriter in the Northwest. His band, Cul an Ti, is hugely popular for their lively traditional Irish tunes and unique blend of Irish and popular songs. Having recorded and performed with many other notable musicians including Kevin Burke, The Bridies, Johnny Connolly, Tony Furtado, Hanz Araki, Winifred Horan, and the touring Irish dance show Celtic Legends, Cary is described as a masterful guitarist with an epic sense of harmony, song structure, and a soulful and captivating vocalist by the Willamette Week newspaper in Portland, Oregon.

Hanneke Cassel with Tristan Clarridge and Keith Murphy.
May 8 - Special concert
Effervescent and engaging, Boston-based fiddler Hanneke Cassel's fiddle music fuses influences from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton with Americana grooves and musical innovations. She has performed and traveled across North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Hannekes music is a blend of the contemporary and traditional, described by the Boston Globe as exuberant and rhythmic, somehow wild and innocent, delivered with captivating melodic clarity and an irresistible playfulness.
The Hanneke Cassel Band features Tristan Clarridge on cello/vocals and Keith Murphy on guitar/vocals. Multi-instrumentalist, 5-time Grand National Fiddle Champion, and pioneering cellist, Tristan Clarridge, creatively synthesizes traditional folk influences with rhythmic vocabulary from jazz, rock and pop music, and is leading a revolution among adventurous young cellists throughout the USA and beyond. He has toured the world with bluegrass/nu-folk sensation Crooked Still and Darol Angers Republic of Strings, as well as Mike Marshall, Bruce Molsky, and Cape Breton fiddle phenomenon Natalie MacMaster. Newfoundland-born guitarist Keith Murphy is a rhythmic powerhouse on guitar and a traditional singer of rare finesse. A native of Newfoundland, he has lived in New England for many years, where he has been an influential presence in the traditional music scene through his work with many respected bands, as a tune writer, and as director of the Northern Roots Festival in Brattleboro, VT. He has four solo recordings of traditional songs, the most recent being Bright As Amber (2023). Together, the Hanneke Cassel Band creates a cutting-edge acoustic sound that retains the integrity and spirit of the Scottish tradition.

Free seeds and takeaways to welcome pollinators will highlight an afternoon of family fun and learning on Saturday, April 25, at Winona Grange in Tualatin, from 1-4 pm.
The goal is to celebrate the role pollinators play in our lives and raise community awareness about pollinator health. Tips are also available for both new and experienced gardeners. Free ice cream sundaes will top off the event.
Adults will gather at 1:15 for a presentation on hummingbirds and bees as pollinators by Marilyn Ellis, a Certified Master Naturalist and Portland Community College instructor. A second presentation at 2:45 by Kristin Reid will focus on no-till (or dig) gardening, which emphasizes preserving soil structure and boosting microbial life while retaining moisture and minimizing weeds. “Grow more. Work Less” is her approach.
All ages can assemble their own free Mason (native, non-stinging) bee houses to take home, along with vegetable- and pollinator-friendly flower seeds. Kid-friendly crafts will again be offered this year. Garden questions will be answered by local hobbyists. A limited number of free seedlings will also be available.
Winona Grange 271 is located at 8340 SW Seneca in Tualatin. For more details, contact info@winonagrange271.org.
Free seed packets provided by Hume Seeds in Puyallup, Washington, Burpee, Baker Creek Seeds, and Wilco.
Winona Grange 271 was founded in 1895 and has provided uninterrupted community service since, including hundreds of events and thousands of hours of educational activities. In addition, the Grange hall is rented by dozens of organizations each year.
