Ms. Carla Justiniano has been a social worker at The Greene School (TGS) for the past year. Previous to that time, she was employed by a community health care facility where she provided individual and family counseling.

In her daily work life at TGS, there really is no “typical” day. Days consist of a variety of challenges, such as working with the Special Education Team, addressing the social/emotional issues identified in a student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP), crisis intervention, family meetings, and responding to many different kinds of requests or help from TGS students and their families.

Ms. Justiniano entered the field of social work/mental health so that clients who are part of her ethnic group would have the opportunity to collaborate with a Latina social worker who shared their common background and had insight into their shared culture. Said Ms. Justiniano, “As a Latina, there has always been limited representation in the world of mental health and access to services for my community and other underserved populations. I feel really connected to cultural awareness and my personal experiences and feel this helps my clinical practice and relationships with my students. I am bilingual, speaking fluently in both English and Spanish. For me, it is a special and beautiful experience to be able to connect with our Spanish-speaking families and students personally and clinically. It feels like home.”

La Sra. Carla Justiniano ha sido trabajadora social en The Greene School (TGS) durante el último año. Anteriormente, trabajaba en un centro de salud comunitario donde brindaba asesoramiento individual y familiar.

En su vida laboral diaria en TGS, realmente no hay un día “típico”. Los días consisten en una variedad de desafíos, como trabajar con el Equipo de Educación Especial, abordar los problemas sociales/emocionales identificados en el Plan Educativo Individual (IEP) de un estudiante, intervención en crisis, reuniones familiares y responder a muchos tipos diferentes de solicitudes o ayuda. de los alumnos de TGS y sus familias.

La Sra. Justiniano ingresó al campo del trabajo social/salud mental para que los clientes que son parte de su grupo étnico tuvieran la oportunidad de colaborar con una trabajadora social latina que compartía sus antecedentes comunes y tenía una idea de su cultura compartida. Dijo la Sra. Justiniano: “Como latina, siempre ha habido una representación limitada en el mundo de la salud mental y el acceso a los servicios para mi comunidad y otras poblaciones desatendidas. Me siento realmente conectado con la conciencia cultural y mis experiencias personales y siento que esto ayuda en mi práctica clínica y en las relaciones con mis estudiantes. Soy bilingüe, hablo con fluidez tanto en inglés como en español. Para mí, es una experiencia especial y hermosa poder conectarme personalmente y clínicamente con nuestras familias y estudiantes de habla hispana. Se siente como en casa."

Reflexionando sobre su papel en TGS, la Sra. Justiniano dijo: “La curación no es lineal y no todos los niños se curan o aprenden de la misma manera. Como trabajador social escolar, estoy en una posición realmente especial para conectarme con los estudiantes a nivel emocional, abogar por la equidad dentro de los sistemas escolares, crear un espacio seguro para normalizar la terapia para nuestros niños y romper el estigma detrás de la salud mental. Estoy agradecida de trabajar en una escuela donde priorizamos las necesidades educativas y emocionales de cada estudiante. Ha sido realmente gratificante para mí construir relaciones sólidas con los estudiantes, enseñarles habilidades que pueden aplicar dentro y fuera del salón de clases y ser un espacio seguro”.

Mr. Thatcher LeBlanc is Accepted into Cornell University

El Sr. Thatcher LeBlanc es aceptado en la Universidad de Cornell

Mr. Thatcher LeBlanc, a senior at The Greene School (TGS) and resident of Warwick, RI, has been accepted at Cornell university, an Ivy League school and privately endowed research university. Cornell is also a partner of the State University of New York. Mr. LeBlanc will study environmental engineering at the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Regarding his application to Cornell, Mr. LeBlanc said, “I applied to Cornell because of the high-level environmental education I will experience through real work and applied products, much like here at The Greene School. I am most excited about the journey toward becoming an environmental engineer and taking part in the fight against climate change.”

El Sr. Thatcher LeBlanc, estudiante de último año en The Greene School (TGS) y residente de Warwick, Rhode Island, fue aceptado en la Universidad de Cornell, una escuela de la Ivy League y una universidad de investigación con fondos privados.
