Our April Meeting

Stories Under Fire: Book Bans, LGBTQ+ Voices, and Intellectual Freedom

Tuesday, April 28, 7 PM

For many people, reading is a way to explore, learn, and find new ways of understanding what’s possible; this can be especially true for LGBTQ+ individuals. However, libraries and stories are under attack through book challenges and bans that restrict access to information and threaten intellectual freedom. Sam Helmick (pictured), 2025-2026 President of the American Library Association (ALA), will join us via Zoom to discuss banned books, particularly those with LGBTQ+ representation, the broader landscape of challenges around intellectual freedom, and how libraries and the ALA are responding across the country. You can listen to Sam's talk in person OR virtually—please email us if you'd like to join via Zoom.

As 2025-2026 ALA President, Sam Helmick (they/them) has focused on providing resources and tools for ALA members and communities to advocate for libraries and their essential role in society. Based in Iowa, Helmick has served in a variety of leadership positions within ALA, including on the ALA Executive Board, the Intellectual Freedom Committee, and the Freedom to Read Foundation. They are a past president of the Iowa Library Association, a former chair of the Iowa Governor’s Commission of Libraries, and a nationally recognized voice for intellectual freedom, rural advocacy, and community-centered library service.

After the program, we will hold space for confidential sharing and support for in-person attendees. Meetings are held from 7-9 PM in the Campbell Room at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Avenue in Berkeley (look for the PFLAG banner). Masks are optional. We ask that you not attend if you are feeling unwell or if you've been in contact with anyone who is unwell.

Between meetings, our board is still here to connect with you one-on-one. Email pflagoeb@gmail.com or leave us a voicemail at 510-562-7692 and we will call you back.

Know Your Rights and Resources

We stand in solidarity with communities across the country in opposing ICE raids that are cruel, unlawful, and carried out without due process. We stand with the brave protesters and neighbors who have put themselves at risk to protect one another. Here is some important information from Bay Resistance to navigate this time.

If you see ICE, call your local rapid response hotline to report it. In Alameda County this is the Alameda County Immigration Legal Education Partnership, 510-241-4011. Find another area's hotline here. Save it to your contacts!

You have the right to film police/ICE/military officials. Try to document the location, date, time, names, badge numbers, license plate numbers, types of vehicles, and clothing of agents. Focus on the agents, not the person being targeted. Film context, like the location and any landmarks nearby.

If you are stopped by police/ICE/military on the street, you can ask if you are free to go. If the answer is “yes,” calmly walk away. If you are stopped, you have the right to remain silent and to not share your immigration status. Say “I wish to exercise my right to remain silent,” “I will not answer any questions without first speaking to my lawyer,” and “I do not consent to a search” (although an officer can pat you down if they have reasonable suspicion that you are armed and dangerous).

If police/ICE/military come to your home, you have the right not to open your door unless you see a valid warrant. Ask if they have a warrant, and if they say yes, ask them to slide it under the door or hold it up to a window. ICE officers need a warrant signed by a judge to enter your home. Other officers need a search warrant signed by a judge to enter your home.

If you are arrested for political or protest activity, you can call the National Lawyers Guild SF Bay Area at 510-250-1700.

The Bay Resistance website is full of ways to learn your rights and stand up for your communities. We also invite you to read the California PFLAG chapters' Statement Against ICE Raids in Minnesota and Across the Nation.

Learn and Share with PFLAG San Francisco

PFLAG San Francisco, one of our wonderful local sister PFLAG chapters, has two virtual events this month that you might enjoy.

On Wednesday, April 22 at 6pm, join a virtual conversation with Bria Brown-King, Associate Executive Director of interACT: Advocates for Intersex Youth. Bria will discuss the current landscape of intersex advocacy—from youth empowerment to policy and research—and what allies and families can do to support the intersex community. Register here.

On Thursday, April 23 from 7–9pm, join a Special Topic Support Group on Neurodiversity and Gender. An experienced facilitator will present and lead a discussion exploring the intersection of neurodiversity and gender identity. Register here for this rich and important conversation.

Queer Women of Color Film Festival Returns to SF June 12-14

The Queer Women of Color Film Festival (QWOCFF) has announced its 2026 theme, We Resist, and We Roll—a powerful reflection of both urgency and resilience. As governments continue to deprioritize the safety and well-being of marginalized communities and the entertainment industry continues to gatekeep their stories, QWOCFF remains a vital platform for LBTQIA+ BIPOC filmmakers, building on 25 years of storytelling that has never waited for permission. From June 12–14, the festival will bring its dynamic, community-rooted programming to the Presidio Theatre in San Francisco. Free and accessible, QWOCFF 2026 invites audiences to witness stories that persist, resist, and roll forward—registration coming soon, so be sure to save the date.
