Training staff enhances instructing skills through series of training courses
Instructors, coordinators, and directors from the SSMRC not only talk the talk, but walk the walk when it comes to training. 

From April 3-5, a combination of training staff attended courses at the International Training Center in Las Vegas. Courses included WFED 105- Integrated Curriculum Implementation, WFED 106- Program & Facilities Management, WFED 197- Integrated Written Communication Skills, WFED 207 – Assessment Techniques, WFED 270 Introduction to Industrial Training and WFED 310 – Leadership Competencies for Supervisors. 

These classes are focused on improving training and help them to achieve instructor certification in not only traditional hands on “train the trainer” courses but also working to improved instructing skills.

Mobile County students explore career opportunities at career and technical education fair
High school students in Mobile County are exploring career opportunities available to them in the trade industry.

Millwright instructor, Robert Mitchell represented SSMRC Millwright Local 1192 at the Mobile County Public Schools Career and Technical Education Career Fair and talked with students about the millwright trade.

During the event, over 21 seniors expressed interest in applying for the apprenticeship program and beginning their career as a union millwright upon graduation in May.
Texas Workforce Commission presents tools to MVP Class 22 at Fort Hood
On April 20, the Texas Workforce Commission presented individuals in Fort Hood's 22nd Military Veterans Program class with tool sets. These tools will help individuals build a career, as they transition from the military to a new day-to-day vocation in the trade industry.
SSMRC Sisters in the Brotherhood Committee prioritizing recruitment

Recruitment is a vital part of growing and strengthening the union, and the SSMRC Sisters in the Brotherhood Committee has made recruitment a top priority for its 2023-2024 goal cycle. Through collaborations with local business agents and training directors, several SIB members have been able to attend conferences and job fairs to reach out to young adults and working men and women. These events give committee members opportunities to share not only what a millwright is, but the benefits of being a union millwright.

SSMRC director promotes our workforce to auto-industry leaders in Tennessee

SSMRC Central Region Director Jeff Smith promoted our recruitment and training capabilities April 13 when he met with leaders of the Tennessee Automotive Manufacturers Association and Ford’s BlueOval City project under construction near Memphis.

The meeting took place during TAMA’s Spring Conference, held at the West Tennessee AgResearch Center in Jackson, Tennessee. Smith talked with Rick Youngblood, executive director of TAMA, and Vanessa Preston, human resources manager for Ford’s BlueOval City.

Nashville-area training center ready for equipment installation
Construction of a 25,000-square-foot training center in La Vergne, Tennessee, near Nashville, is complete. The next step is installing training equipment, and a grand opening is slated for May.

While staffing at the Mobile Oilmen's Invitational Golf Tournament in Spanish Fort, Alabama, members of the SSMRC Central Region team discussed the benefits of our workforce with potential employers.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
April Member Spotlight from Local 1554
Being a millwright comes with a lot of hard work. Working conditions are not always pretty and are sometimes tough, but that doesn’t stop the dedicated individuals, who have made the decision to pursue a career in the millwright trade from getting the job done. Local 1554’s Levi Gleason is no stranger to hard work and dedication. 

From a young age, he has been interested in being part of the labor industry. After graduating high school, he worked as a brick mason for a local street department in Indiana before joining the United States Army. During his time in the military, he served as a Military Police Officer in South Korea and Germany and ended his military career as a Counter Narcotics Investigator at Fort Campbell in Kentucky.
