Finishing the School Year on a High Note

It's hard to believe that there is only 6 weeks left in the 2018-2019 school year! This is a busy and important time of year for mentors and students. In your mentoring sessions, try to encourage your mentee to stay focused on finishing the year strong (personally & academically). Here are some tips:

  • Stay organized - check in with your mentee on how they stay organized and keep track of assignments and exams. You might have some helpful advice to offer!
  • Reasonable and Reachable Goals - g oals are a great way to keep students motivated and on-task towards the end of a school year. Help your mentee select one or two small goals to accomplish before the end of the school year. The goals should be challenging but reachable. Work with your mentee to determine the steps to take to work towards their goals.
  • Don't procrastinate - It's an easy hole to fall into... talk to your mentee about staying motivated and not putting off tasks and assignments until the last minute.
  • Think about the outcome - remind your mentee of all their hard work during the school year and how amazing they will feel when they have accomplished their goals.
  • Encouragement - the end of the school year can be very stressful for everyone. Stay positive and encourage your mentee to do the same!

End of Year Reminders for Mentors
  • Remember that our goal is to get every student to at least 15 mentoring sessions before the end of the school year - please schedule your sessions accordingly. If you aren't sure where you stand or are experiencing issues meeting with your mentee, please reach out to your assigned College Success Coach as soon as possible (contact info below). We are here to help!
  • There will be a lot of testing going on throughout Hillsborough County during the next 6 weeks. Please check with your mentee to determine when they are available to meet. Please be patience with school staff as they are feeling the pressure as well!

New Take Stock in Children Scholars are Welcomed into the Program

On March 16th, the TSIC team held a New Student Orientation and 38 new students were welcomed into the program and awarded a Florida Prepaid scholarship.

During orientation, students and parents learned more about the TSIC program and expectations. Students recited the TSIC pledge which includes a statement of accountability and a promise to strive for excellence in their education.

Mentor of the Month
Robert Olszack

Q: How did you become involved with mentoring through the Hillsborough Education Foundation?
A:
I saw a flyer at the public library regarding the mentoring program. In working with students in the past, it was of interest and a good fit for volunteering. It would afford me the opportunity of once again working with students.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of mentoring?
A:
I welcome the opportunity to volunteer in this worthwhile program. I have been enthralled as I listen and speak with students as they acquire awareness on the importance of working through challenges by setting realistic goals, planning to achieve the goals, prioritizing, being diligent in their work ethic, and learning to minimize stress

Q: What do you believe is the key to being a quality mentor?
A:
Possessing skills of empathy, listening, attending to the individual needs of students in meeting challenges, reflection on student's feelings and aspirations, empowering students to make decisions, and being open with students through self-disclosure of present and past successes of the mentor all in assisting students to work through personal challenges and present and future decisions.

Q: When you are not working with students, how do you prefer to spend your free time?
A:
I volunteer in counseling the men of Light House Ministry residential program. I enjoy playing my piano, listening to music, watching sport events, especially Florida State University athletics, reading and studying the good book (Bible) for personal gain and spending quality time with my grandchildren and as a grandparent spoiling them.

Q: What do you hope your mentee will learn from you?
A:
I'm hoping my mentee will set goals, develop plans in attaining set goals, Meeting personal challenges both present and future, empowering oneself to be diligent in making present and future decisions in preparation for higher education and beyond and emphasizing the importance of volunteering in serving the community now and into the future.

Citi Career Day

On March 20th, a group of TSIC students visited Citi's corporate office in Tampa for our annual Citi Career Day. Students toured the facilities and had the opportunity to hear from working professionals. Representatives from the HR department spoke to students about resume and interview skills. Students also heard from professions from the law department, cyber security and technology.
