Password Safety Reminders

Last month our community experienced a series of phishing attempts targeting agency-level login credentials. We appreciate the hard work put in by all of our affected partners to prevent further spread of these attacks and protect the safety of our clients' data. To help prevent any future issues, we'd like to provide a few additional tips to help our users keep their HMIS accounts secure:

• Only provide your HMIS password at trusted links. If you receive a suspicious email with a link that seems to take you to your log-in screen, immediately click away and use a known link instead.

• Try to always use unique passwords for different accounts. If your email password is compromised, every other account with that password may be compromised as well.

• Do not save your HMIS password to your browser. It may save you time, but it allows anyone at your workstation to access client data under your name.

(Hint: your agency's HMIS Security Officers will check this in quarterly security audits!)

• Likewise, never write down your passwords on sticky-notes at your desk. If not properly secured, any written password can be taken.

Meet the Team!

Since our team has grown since our last update, we thought we'd take the opportunity to allow our users to meet the folks behind the computer screens!

Many of you may not be aware that the HMIS Team is now spread out all around the U.S., with 9 team members currently living across 5 different states. Over the next couple of months, we will be highlighting the members of the best (in our opinion) HMIS squad in the business!

Jose Marines - HMIS Data Analyst

Beginning with the newest member of the team, Jose is from Corpus Christi, TX and has been living in San Antonio for about four years. He graduated with a BS in Business from Texas A&M (Gig 'em!) and recently graduated with in MS in Business Analytics from Texas A&M Commerce. He started with the HMIS Team in March 2024.

Jose likes to watch and play sports, go to the gym, read, go to concerts and listen to music, travel, and be outdoors.

Tracie joined the Haven for Hope HMIS Team in July 2023. Prior to joining Haven, Tracie worked with the CoC/HMIS Lead for NC-507 in Raleigh NC.

Tracie lives in Raleigh NC with her partner Tony, teenage son Hunter, 2 cats (Beans and Toast), and 2 dogs (Callie and Izzy) plus 1 foster dog (Meg).

Tracie is a self pro-claimed serial crafter. She has currently dove in head-first into crochet. Tracie also enjoys traveling, and kayaking.

James Moses - Application Support Specialist

James was born in Texas, went to high school in Seoul, South Korea, college in Chicago, IL, and did four years in the US Army Signal Corps. Afterwards he worked several years doing systems integration at Northrop Grumman in Baltimore, MD before landing in San Antonio, TX with the goal of living better and doing something "a little nicer with my time and energy."

James usually works on campus at Haven for Hope, so if you work there or are visiting, feel free to stop by and say hello! On weekends you can find him wandering the Texas wilds, hiking, and swimming.
