2018 MathCounts Recap
Each year, the NJSPE Education Foundation sponsors the New Jersey MathCounts Competition. The events begin with interschool competitions consisting of both teams and individuals. The winners of those competitions move on to one of six regional competitions. From Regionals, the winners advance to State and then the National Competitions. The New Jersey team advancing to Nationals consists of the top 4 "Mathletes" in the state and the coach of the winning team. Overall this year, there were 149 schools, 131 teams, and 619 individuals totaling 1,143 students who participated in the program.

INDUSTRY INSIGHT
ENR 2017 Top 500 Design Firms
Major design firms have set up the starting blocks and are ready to begin the sprint for a rapidly expanded marketplace. After the election of Donald Trump, companies report positive signs in most markets. Early economic news has been encouraging, as job creation in the private sector spiked in the first quarter of 2017. But the failure of the president and Congress to agree on a health-care reform package and a tax-cut program has many firms worrying that it may be a while before the starting gun goes off.
Firms with Public Contracts Donated $9.4M to N.J. Politicians in 2017. Who Donated the Most? NJ.com
Big election year, big campaign contributions from companies that do business with the state.
Firms with public contracts with the state shelled out more than $9.4 million in political contributions last year, according to a new report released Monday.
That's a 4 percent spike in political contributions over 2016. It's not a surprise because the governor and every legislative race in the state were on the ballot in 2017.
The Election Law Enforcement Commission report showed the top five donors were engineering firms: Remington & Vernick Engineers, T&M Associates, Alaimo Group, Pennoni Associates and CME Associates.
Op-ed: An Investment in STEM is an Investment in New Jersey's Future
NJ Spotlight
Last month, we celebrated New Jersey's commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in honor of NJ STEM Month. Throughout the state, students, schools, parents, businesses, employees, and program providers
promoted STEM activities and showcased their work.
There is certainly much to be celebrated. According to U.S. News and World Report, New Jersey is home to 21 of the top 251 STEM high schools nationwide. But to truly maximize our potential and reach more students, as well as meet the workforce needs of the future, we must do even more to educate our children in STEM disciplines.

NSPE Statement on Autonomous Vehicle Pedestrian Fatality
nspe.org
NSPE is troubled to hear of the tragic pedestrian fatality in Arizona-the first fatal crash involving a fully autonomous vehicle. Our deepest condolences go out to the victim's family and all involved in this incident. In representing professional engineers and their commitment to upholding the public health, safety, and welfare, NSPE has long advocated for a comprehensive and informed approach to developing and deploying fully autonomous vehicles, and recently released a policy guide with guidelines to measure the safety readiness of these vehicles. Our hope is public policy decision-makers, regulators, manufacturers, and others will heed these guidelines and consider the major safety, technological, and ethical implications at stake to mitigate future accidents.
Registration has officially opened for the 2018 Professional Engineers Conference. This conference will be held July 17-23 in Las Vegas and will feature up to 11 PDHs. Early bird pricing ends April 30, so register now to save money!
