Join us in celebrating National Poetry Month with award-winning poet Ari Tison. Ari will discuss her upcoming debut YA novel, SAINTS OF THE HOUSEHOLD (a combination of verse and vignettes), as well as her experience participating in POETRY Magazine´s first ever edition to feature poetry for children-young adult. Ari will also lead a mini-craft session with a prompt followed by time for audience questions.
Please register in advance to receive login information (you will get an email with the Zoom meeting ID and password the night before the event). As usual, our meetings are free and open to the public. We encourage you to invite members of the Brazos Valley writing community to join us!

The virtual-only Texas Library Association 2021 Conference will be held April 22-24. The five Texas regions of SCBWI are coordinating efforts to have a virtual booth among the exhibits available to attendees.Look for more details in your inbox soon!

The annual Crystal Kite Award is a peer-given award to recognize great books from 15 SCBWI regional divisions around the world.
You must be a current member (and logged-in on the website) to vote and you may only vote once per voting round.

Congratulations to former Brazos Valley SCBWI member and current Illustrator Coordinator of SCBWI Hawaii Mirka Hokkanen whose picture book Kitty and Cat along with a second title has been acquired by Candlewick for her author-illustrator debut. Publication is set for spring 2023 and fall 2023, respectively.

The schedule includes keynotes; a publishing panel; 9 breakout sessions on writing, illustrating and professional development; intensives on picture books, novels and illustration; along with critiques, pitches, portfolio showcase, and more. Due to COVID-19 and to keep our attendees and faculty safe, this conference will be held online. All except one of the sessions will be recorded and available to registered attendees for 2 weeks after the conference. It is highly recommended to attend as many sessions as possible during the conference days to get the most out of the event.

RMC-SCBWI Spring Webinar Event: From Soup to Book: Behind the Scenes of WATERCRESS

Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of this acclaimed picture book. The team behind the upcoming Watercress, including author Andrea Wang, illustrator Jason Chin, agent Erin Murphy, editor Neal Porter, and art director Jennifer Browne, will present on their roles in the picture book process, from manuscript to publication. Format will be a panel of all faculty members followed by four breakout rooms, each of which will be recorded and available for one month.

Panelists Mary Boone, Curtis Manley, and Ellie Peterson join SCBWI WWA’s nonfiction coordinator, Lisa L. Owens, for a conversation about the many dimensions of creating science books for young readers. We’ll take a look at each guest’s featured book (all three fall under the broader topic of the solar system/planets) and examine different approaches to homing in on a specific concept and crafting form, tone, point of view, and more.
