YWCA April 2019 header
Dear Friends,

If you were able to join us for our Equity Summit on April 10-11, I hope you were inspired by Dr. Gail Christopher’s words about racial healing and transformation.

She implored us to envision a future in which all human lives are valued equally. She then noted that we must take concrete steps toward this, the first of which is to ask, “where are we now?”

Our upcoming report on Equity in Evanston, does just that. It provides a current snapshot of the gaps and barriers preventing some of our neighbors from reaching their full potential. We shared the preliminary findings of this report at the summit and you can read these findings here.

The Equity in Evanston report is just a step, but it’s a starting point for how we can enact real change in Evanston and other local communities, too.

As part of our mission, we endeavor to give all people access to the same opportunities so they have a fair shot at success, regardless of their background or identity. As Dr. Christopher said, we want to make the “hierarchy of human value a historic relic.”

Thank you for your enthusiastic support of this important work.

How swimming is connected to YWCA's mission
At the YWCA Flying Fish awards ceremony on April 4, our COO Kristen White talked about the relationship between swimming and eliminating racism and empowering women. Read a condensed version of Kristen’s insightful remarks about “swimming suffragists” and civil rights “wade-ins” here.

Also, congratulations to our swimmers who were honored at the ceremony as marathon award winners (this year’s marathon raised $75,000 for YWCA programs) and outstanding swimmers.
