In the News: VCA Redmond Animal Hospital Recycling Spotlight
VCA Redwood Animal Hospital (VCA) staff are dedicated to recycling efforts that go beyond the bin! Their efforts include:
      Safely disposing of their fluorescent light bulbs through mail-in boxes provided by local recycler EcoLights;
      Managing their hazardous waste through the King County business waste disposal program, and;
      Responsibly recycling electronic waste through a local electronics recycler.

Recently, VCA needed to let go of 17 metal animal kennels and 15 cat and dog carriers and they knew disposal would be costly. However staff didn’t have time to research reuse options and were considering paying a $150 fee to recycle the metal cages, while the plastic carriers would have had to go to the landfill.

Fortunately, VCA contacted the City of Redmond’s solid waste team for free assistance. The City’s team researched options to meet VCA’s needs. Ultimately, VCA was able to partner with local animal shelters to donate the kennels and the carriers for reuse. This environmentally preferable option diverted plastic from the landfill, and provided the shelters with items they could use. By reaching out to the City, VCA was able to avoid the expense of costly disposal options, preserve valuable staff time, and benefit the environment and the local community.
If you have a question about how to dispose of something, want recycling posters, or need staff training to help your team recycle better and reduce waste, please call the City of Redmond’s solid waste team at 425-556-2900 or email recycle@redmond.gov.
