What Makes a Well Trained Horse?

Someone asked me once, "What makes a well trained horse?"  The question is definitely an interesting one.  People aspire to do many different things with their horses and so the answer to the question may be different depending on who you ask.  But for me, the answer is clear.  Every well trained horse exemplifies a number of characteristics that parlay them to the top of the class to be role modes for all others.  At Next Level HorsemanshipTM, there are the core characteristics that we use in the NLHTM Training Program regardless of discipline to ultimately produce the BEST results for a lifetime of  Partnership, Performance and Possibilities for you and your horse.

NLHTM Cue Tip - Finesse Your Horse's Groundwork

If you're looking for a better Partnership AND greater Performance from your horse, then you should concentrate on fine tuning and finessing the groundwork in his training program.  The Foundation in groundwork cannot be overlooked if you want more out of your relationship with your horse.  And, if you're looking to excel in any discipline, you will need to concentrate on making sure your horse has no holes in his Foundation training.  This may sound like an obvious statement, but in fact, too many people overlook the basics when it comes to training their horse.

It was the opportunity I had been waiting for!

Emily and Jack

I came to Next Level HorsemanshipTM after seeing Suzanne, Lauren, and Brooke show their wonderfully trained mustangs at the Ag Arena in State College, PA. I had been taking riding lessons elsewhere already, but I spoke to Suzanne after the presentation about coming out to see her work and to talk to her about what my options might be. It was the opportunity I had been waiting for! I spent several hours watching Suzanne and the other staff work with horses using natural horsemanship techniques. She and I talked about my interests and goals and created a riding program that would work for me as an individual.  I signed up for the daily lease option and came once a week. I spent a couple of hours each time, taking my time with grooming, learning ground work, and honing my riding skills.  It's a wonderfully well-rounded program with plenty of feedback and input and flexibility. It's about learning the broader aspects of horsemanship rather than focusing on the details of proper riding form. The horses available for lease are varied in personality and specialty, but they are all grounded in Suzanne's basic training program, responding well to the rider and understanding what is being asked of them. Suzanne and Lauren were always welcoming and I felt free to show up anytime at their facility during their normal hours.

Around the Farm

Next Level HorsemanshipTM, has some of the BEST volunteers in the country! And now, we feel very fortunate to have two of them as part of our staff! Recently, Jordan Hudson, 'Jordy' and Amanda Malecki joined NLHTM as part-time staff members to assist us in routine daily operations at the facility as well as manning the ship when we're on the road at some of our cross country events. We're so excited to have Jordy and Amanda with us and consider them a valuable asset to NLHTM.

Both Jordy and Amanda are students at The Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA majoring in Animal Science with an Equine Science Minor. They are wonderful to work with and exemplary in their work ethic. We are proud to have them become a part of the NLHTM team. Welcome aboard ladies!

Reining Filly Updates

Both of our lovely ladies have been started under saddle.  They are moving off the leg at the walk, trot and lope.  We are working on having their shoulders follow their nose with some outside rein pressure.  Both ladies are feeling our seat well and are starting to "whoa" off a sit in the saddle.  Cisco is advancing her already fantastic groundwork maneuvers.  Kahlua has been out on trail twice, once with buddies and once by herself.  What better way to get young horses exposed!  She also has started her trick training portion of the program and has all four feet on the pedestal.  Kahlua is headed out to her  first big event at Equine Affaire.  Check her out during our demos!
