Our Library is an Open Book

Libraries change and evolve to meet the needs of their community and adapt to new technologies. At Phillips Free Library though, one thing is constant - we exist to create an equitable world. Our mission is to empower and inspire all people to grow and connect with one another to create a better world for all. Here are some ways to connect with your community at the library this month.

March Highlight

Chain Reaction Challenge

On Friday, April 11th from 6:30-8:00pm we will have a Chain Reaction Challenge afterhours program for youth in 3rd-8th grade. If you have ever seen a Rube Goldberg Machines which uses a series of chain reactions to transfer energy and complete a task, this is what we will be doing. In the picture, the planks fall like dominoes into the paper which moves the marble through the tube and into the cup. We will work in small groups to make our own chain reaction machine.

The Ellesmere Wolves: Behavior and Ecology in the High Arctic

by L. David Mech, Morgan Anderson, H.Dean Cluff

place hold here

For parts of twenty-four summers, wolf biologist L. David Mech lived with a group of wolves on Ellesmere Island, some six hundred miles from the North Pole. Elsewhere, most wolves flee from even the scent of humans, but these animals, evolving relatively free from human persecution, are unafraid. Having already spent twenty-eight years studying other populations of wolves more remotely by aircraft, snow-tracking, live-trapping, and radio-tracking, Mech was primed to join their activities up close and record their interactions with each other. This book tells the remarkable story of what Mech—and the researchers who followed him—have learned while living among the wolves.

Young Adult Fiction

Under the Light of Fireflies

by Lee Sanders

place hold here

It’s 1981 in Texarkana, Texas, and Noah Ellis is trying hard to remember. Still reeling from the loss of his father in a suspicious tragedy, Noah is in a tragedy of his own—one that results in another inexplicable death, this time leaving Noah to suffer from severe amnesia.

After that day, everything changes. Noah becomes an unwitting star in a highly publicized trial. Girls start to notice him, and kids who once bullied him now allow him to run with their pack—at a cost. Standing as always in his big brother’s shadow, Noah also has a little sister he must look out for. But Noah’s still stuck on that day and the accident he can’t remember. As town secrets come to light and summer draws to a close, Noah must find a way to salvage all that he’s lost, and to learn what is truly precious.

Coming in May

Meet the Author

Back in November we had our first Meet and Greet with local authors with a promise for additional meet and greets to come. Be looking for a date and time in May to interact with more local authors at Phillips Free Library.

A Glimpse from March

Family Book Club was extra special in March. We "traveled" around the world and learned about The Netherlands, Romania, Italy and Argentina from people who have lived in those countries. What a great experience it was for the book club participants to learn about some of these countries from other children!
