Conserving the land, water, and way of life in Colorado's San Luis Valley since 1999

APRIL NEWS FROM RiGHT

Spring Brings Fresh Energy and Exciting Updates

Important Information

The RiGHT website is still under construction. We’re updating content, resources, and tools to better serve you. The full site will be back up and running early May. Thanks for your patience!

All of our staff will be attending the annual Keep It Colorado Summit May 21st through 23rd. The office will be closed during that time as well as Monday, May 26th, for Memorial Day.

SAVE THE DATE! Join us in Denver on May 28th at Laws Whiskey House for the release of their special Headwaters Whiskey. RiGHT’s Executive Director, Laura, will be speaking at the event. More details coming soon.

A Note from Matt, Conservation Director

Spring has arrived in the San Luis Valley, and with it comes the steady rise of spring runoff in the Rio Grande. The irrigation season is officially underway, and it's always inspiring to watch this lifeblood of our valley make its way across the landscape.

Here at RiGHT, this time of year also means gearing up for one of our most important efforts: our annual monitoring season. We’re excited to reconnect with many of you and check in on the lands we’ve worked together to protect. If you’re a landowner with a conservation easement, you can expect a letter from us soon with more details. As always, we’re grateful for your stewardship and partnership!

Thank You to the Boettcher Foundation!

We’re excited to share that RiGHT has received a $5,000 Rural Catalyst Grant from the Boettcher Foundation! This support will allow us to host a series of listening sessions focused on water in the San Luis Valley—bringing together farmers, ranchers, conservation partners, and community members to identify local needs and guide the future of RiGHT’s water-related work. We’re deeply grateful to the Boettcher Foundation for investing in this important step toward resilient, community-driven water stewardship.

Meet Our New Board Member:

Jon Harley

Jon is a third-year law student with a passion for protecting rivers and preserving landscapes. Before law school, he spent nearly a decade guiding multi-day river trips throughout the Colorado River Basin, where he developed a deep appreciation for flowing water and open spaces. Jon brings a practical, on-the-ground perspective to water law and conservation. In his free time, he enjoys gardening, cycling, and riding trails on his dirt bike. Welcome, Jon!

Welcome Our AmeriCorps Member: Sandi Heiner

Meet Sandi! Sandi is RiGHT's new AmeriCorps Member supporting monitoring and stewardship work this year. With a background in Restoration Ecology and over a decade of experience in natural resources, Sandi is excited to return to conservation after time in the IT world. She’s passionate about agroforestry and regenerative agriculture and looks forward to connecting with landowners and supporting working lands across the San Luis Valley. We are thrilled to have her working with us.

Photo of the Month

Last week, our Community Engagement Director, Jocelyn, represented RiGHT at the Decode Colorado: Water film premiere event in Denver. Hosted by PBS12, the evening included a screening of the new documentary and a panel discussion. The film beautifully featured the San Luis Valley, including stories from some of our very own conservation easement landowners. We’re honored to see their voices and the landscape we all care so deeply about highlighted in this important conversation about the future of water in Colorado.
