Action Items this issue:

  • Historic Arts District Community Survey in English or Spanish
  • Forward this newsletter to a friend (in EG or not) so they can take the survey and learn about Friends of EG Library

Historic Dist. Community Survey - Last Chance!

We've had 61 responses to the survey so far, mostly from Phase 1. We really need to hear from everyone, especially if you live near the buildings. The survey closes April 24. Have we heard from you??

The red-tile-roof mess halls on Ord are about 4,000 square feet each, for a total of 28,000 sqft. The warehouses on Sloat are 3,000 sqft each, for another 24,000 sqft. That's a lot of space and a lot of opportunities for EG and beyond. What should we do?

The information we gather will be shared with the county planning department as they look for a developer who restores buildings like ours and turns them into vibrant assets for the community.

Please tell us your thoughts - we need all voices.

Help us find out what EG residents and Friends of EG want to see in the Historic Arts District. Anyone over 16 is invited to answer this short survey. Your email will NOT be collected (unless you opt in to help make the dream a reality).

AND we're looking for someone to translate into and out of Spanish - maybe a student who needs volunteer hours?

Parking Update

News is news, even if it's not the news we'd like to hear. Last we heard, the county has not started the independent parking survey mandated by the Board of Supervisors. We'll keep you posted as soon as we learn more.

Library Update

And good news is good news! The EG branch of Monterey County Free Libraries is moving along. There's a great explanation of how libraries are funded on the MCFL website HERE. While there is a budget for fixtures and furnishings, the current economic climate may change the prices of some items.

This is where a Friends group comes in - what should we give our library? For example, the budget calls for a librarian's chair, can we make sure they have a really nice chair? Maybe a projector or sound system? Do you have ideas? A zoom conversation is being planned so we can learn and share ideas - to find out more email friendsofeglibrary@gmail.com (you don't have to live in EG to be a Friend of EG library). As a Friend you can help the library be an even more wonderful place.

Ft Ord Update: Cleanup, Historic Photos

The answer to last month's question "what's missing from the Army's annual "Environmental Cleanup Online Community Workshop?" is: the area across Watkins Gate from EG. Folks say it used to be a firing range, or maybe a stables, or both.

A representative of the company doing Ft Ord cleanup says the area isn't on the cleanup map because it was transferred to the county, and before that happened it was deemed safe. They are doing more research on its cleanup and will get back to us. As we learn more about its past, we'll let you know.

A wonderful collection of photographs of original East Garrison buildings can be found HERE. Want to know more about Ft Ord history? Contact us to join a research team.
