Educate Your Borrower, then Verify their Insurance Information
Car buying season is near and that means more car purchases (hopefully) and more loans for your financial institution!
It also means more borrowers to inform and educate of their need to maintain insurance throughout the life of their loan, as well as the requirement to provide proof of their insurance.
At loan origination, make sure you educate the borrower on what is considered "Acceptable Insurance" and what will happen if they do not maintain insurance. If your financial institution participates in indirect lending, it can be more difficult to properly communicate this information at origination because you are at the mercy of the dealer. However, it is important to make verifying insurance at loan closing a requirement of the dealer, including gathering the borrower's insurance company and agent information.
Being proactive in educating the borrower of their insurance requirements can prevent future confusion and will result in more borrowers carrying "Acceptable Insurance".
