APRIL 2020
The health and safety of our members is our top priority. The Booth Exhibition is proceeding but AWA's events in May have been cancelled.  We will have a number of virtual events during the run of the show, as well an Artists' Reception in late August. We will keep you update through the Events page on our website. Stay safe!

We encourage you to share positive messages, images, podcasts... with your fellow AWA members by posting with: #studio2studioAWA.  We will be sharing these on our social media outlets.
Head Study of Matthew Innis by Nicole Mon é, Oil on panel, 18" x 36"
Congratulations to the Spring Online Show Award Winners!

American Women Artists extends congratulations to all the artists juried into the 2020 Spring Online Juried Show! More than 1,300 artworks were submitted, out of which 124 incredible pieces were chosen. Of those juried into the show, 15 were awarded prizes. New York artist, Nicole Moné is this year's Grand Prize Winner!

"I'm overwhelmed, honored, and humbled to have won the Grand Prize," wrote Nicole. "To have received this honor is all the more meaningful knowing the caliber of artists in AWA."

Nicole's painting,  Head Study of Matthew Innis, is a portrait of the Editor-in-Chief of  Underpaintings on-line magazine and one of her closest friends. They met in a painting class at School of Visual Arts in New York City. This painting is infused with random bits from 16 years of inside jokes--an homage to a friendship rooted in art and doused in twisted humor. "I've never laughed so much while working on a painting!  I think Matthew agrees that I used tremendous restraint while depicting my perspective of his inner world. You can just take my word for that," said Nicole.

"During this strange and uncertain time, to receive this recognition from an organization I so admire is a poignant reminder of how sweet life can be even as we press on through difficulty," Nicole continued. "I'm honored to be a part of AWA. Thank you!"

2020 Spring Online Juried Show Finalized

The following 124 artists were selected for this year's Spring Online Juried Show. Three jurors picked the final show, Tonya Turner Carroll (NM), Nadine Robbins (NY), and Ellen Woodbury (CO), and we are grateful for their time and expertise. All three expressed how impressed they were with the quality of work by our members.

Our thanks go out to Tonya, Nadine, and Ellen for selecting this year's Spring Online Show!

Our Incredible Sponsors!

We are awed by the generosity of the following companies who donated merchandise and gift certificates that were used in our award packages for the 2020 Spring Online Juried Show, particularly at a time when many businesses have closed and there is so much financial uncertainty. Please keep these businesses in mind when you are deciding where to purchase your art supplies and advertisements.

Ellen Woodbury

2020 Spring Online Show Selection Juror and Master Member Ellen Woodbury shared her criteria for jurying the show. Those include "excellent draftsmanship, excellent design and composition, excellent use of color, visible sensitivity for the subject, and a transcendence from the source material. I was looking for the soul of the artist in the work.

"Rhythm is another important aspect of art.  As a sculptor, rhythm and design are the life breath.  Sculptors and painters must be masters of benevolent manipulation and show the viewer where to look, when to look there, as well as how to feel about it.  A piece of art is a journey for the eye, if the artist chooses to make it so. I always look for the journey I am being invited to take. If it is not there, or evident in some way, I do not feel confident of the art or the artist.

"The high quality of the submissions raised the bar for my decisions because so many are terrific and successful works of art. I am heartened and humbled by the quality of work of our Associate Members and Associate Members with Distinction. AWA is a world class group of artists."
