April is Child Abuse Awareness Month

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Amador is bringing awareness to the notion that all children of Amador County deserve to be raised in a safe, secure, and loving home.
 
Pinwheels for Prevention is a nationwide public awareness campaign that puts a new spin on prevention. The pinwheel has come to serve as the national symbol of the great childhoods we want for all children. The campaign uses community activities and public policies to prioritize 
prevention right from the start, making sure child abuse and neglect never occur.
   
Throughout April, planting  pinwheel gardens in honor of  children in communities  demonstrates how we can all support children and  promote ways to make healthy and happy childhoods. 

In Amador there will be  1700 pinwheels total - representing the number of children age 0-5 in Amador County ~ acknowledging that the youngest children are our most vulnerable.

Apr. 1     Children's Flag Raising ~ The Child Abuse Prevention Council will be raising the California Children's Flag here at our office on Monday, April 1. We will be joining counties throughout the state to honor our children all month long, and to remember why we do the work we do!
 
Apr. 5     Wear Blue Day ~ On Friday, April 5th, folks across the US will band together to make a visible commitment to preventing child abuse - and helping make great childhoods happen nationwide - by wearing blue. Post a picture of yourself, your group of friends, your family, or your co-workers wearing blue on our Facebook page:  www.facebook.com/AmadorChildAbusePreventionCouncil. 
 
Apr. 11 Kid's Day at the Capitol ~ Thursday, April 11th, 10:00am - 2:00pm, a fun-filled, educational event with lots of free activities for kids! The event will include guest speakers, performances, and various activities for youth and children. 
 
Apr. 27 Celebrate Our Children ~ Saturday, April 27, 11:00am - 2:00pm, celebrating our children for 21 years! This year's event will feature exciting activities, food, a car seat check, petting zoo, entertainment, and fluoride varnishes! Everything is FREE! 


Knitting for a Cause - Period of Purple Crying ~ We are still collecting purple caps to help spread the word about the Period of Purple Crying to new parents! Find starter yarn and all information you'll need at KVGC Radio in Jackson all this month!

Family Strengthening  
Mini-Grants Now Available!
 
We are excited to announce that funding is available for Family Strengthening mini-grant proposals for the 2018-19 fiscal year. Mini-grants will be awarded up to $2,000. Funding is provided by the Amador Child Abuse Prevention Council (ACAPC).
 
Grants are available for qualified organizations and agencies to provide Family Strengthening programs within the County of Amador.
 
Family Strengthening is the premise that children do well when families do well, and that
families do well when they live in supportive communities. Enhancing connections within
families, and between families, and the institutions that affect them, result in better outcomes
for children and their families.
 
Mini-Grant Application

Mini-Grant applications may be submitted to ACAPC at any time throughout the 2018-19 fiscal year, however grant reviews and awards will occur bi-monthly.
A Trauma-Informed Book Club!

Here is a great way to become trauma-informed and build your knowledge around adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and resiliency.
 
Inspired by an ACEs Connection idea, we are following along, sharing with you one book each month that focuses on the issues of trauma and toxic stress in children and in our communities. Read along with us, and use the discussion questions to further the conversation around this timely and important topic. Join us on our Facebook page to discuss the follow-up questions each month for a more in-depth understanding of how trauma, ACEs, and resiliency are inter-related and impact our community.

For April, we have  Managing Emotional Mayhem: The Five Steps for Self-Regulation, by Dr. Becky A. Bailey.

Managing Emotional Mayhem expresses different ways a parent, adult or caretaker might handle their emotions while a child is misbehaving, throwing a tantrum, back talking or simply just not listening. While taking into consideration previous beliefs, this book is meant to teach self-regulation and different learning skills to both child and adult, in order to help the child onto a better path.

 
Summary questions:
  1. What is self-regulation?
  2. What are some reasons as to why a child could be misbehaving?
  3. Do you think it is important for a child and their guardian to have a strong relationship when the child is young?
  4. What are 2 things a teacher could learn from this book and incorporate into their classroom?

Free Mandated Reporter Training  
The second Thursday of every month, from 10:00am - 12:00pm, 
the Child Abuse Prevention Council is holding free mandated reporter trainings. Open to parents, teachers, the community, staff or colleagues needing a refresher course, or new staff with no previous training, give
