April Newsletter

Wendell Foster is proud to recognize April as Occupational Therapy Month! Occupational Therapy (OT) is one of three outpatient therapy services provided through our Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility (CORF). OT addresses daily tasks that a child or adult may encounter, such as getting dressed or picking up a pencil. Using state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, such as a sensory room, an adapted gaming center, suspended equipment, and assistive technology, our OT staff strive to provide personalized therapy plans that help our care recipients achieve their every day goals. With the help of our therapists, care recipients participate in rock climbing, swing exercises, and even ax-throwing! Believe it or not, these are all forms of Occupational Therapy. As we like to say at Wendell Foster, OT puts the "fun" in functional!

To celebrate Occupational Therapy Month, Wendell Foster's OT team coordinated activities involving OT each week for both care recipients and staff to enjoy! Week 1 kicked off with arts and crafts using assistive technology. Participating in arts and crafts promotes the use of fine motor skills, which is a main component of OT. For Week 2, therapists set up a lemonade stand, with assistance from those we serve! They whipped up some yummy lemon shake ups for fellow care recipients and Wendell Foster staff. Week 3 will wrap up the month with a fun game of bingo using a new piece of assistive technology: our new Switch Adapted Bingo Game!

We are so thankful for our team of Difference Makers in Occupational Therapy who truly empower those we serve to accomplish life-changing goals. The month of April is a great way to celebrate your impact, but we recognize all you do for Wendell Foster each month of the year!

HOPPING Into Spring at Wendell Foster 🐰
Wendell Foster had some very special guests "hop" onto campus this month...live rabbits!
Residents played "Bunny Bingo" for a chance to hold and take photos with the bunnies! Everyone was so "hoppy" to see the bunnies, and they definitely brought smiles to our residents and staff! We can't wait to hop into springtime! 🐰
Wendell Foster staff were in the zone at our "eggs-citing" surprise Easter egg hunt last week! 🐣 Eggs were hidden throughout the Sensory Park for the chance to win a candy bag or a special prize! Thank you to the Wendell Foster Employee Recognition Committee for always thinking of creative ways to celebrate our employees!

Interested in donating baked goods to the Pie Auction? Donated cakes, pies, and other desserts can be delivered before 4 pm on the day of the auction to the Whitesville Senior Citizen Center.
Angie's Yes! Moment
At Wendell Foster, we specialize in making Yes! Moments happen for people with disabilities. More often than not, our staff also experience these Yes! Moments through working with those we serve. In this video, Angie Bumpus, Recreation Nurse at Wendell Foster, shares the story of her special connection with Wendell Foster resident, John, and the Yes! Moment that changed her life. πŸ’™ Thank you, Angie, for sharing your story with us!

Do you have a Wendell Foster Yes! Moment that you'd like to share? Email Gabby Bradley, Community Engagement Specialist, at gbradley@wendellfoster.org. Your Yes! Moment could be featured in a future video or newsletter!
Congressman Guthrie Visits Wendell Foster
Wendell Foster was excited to welcome Congressman Brett Guthrie to our campus for a tour! Congressman Guthrie previously participated in a virtual meeting with staff from the Kentucky Assistive Technology Services Network to learn about the services they provided to Kentuckians. Wendell Foster is one of five state assistive technology resource centers and is located in the Congressman’s district. Congressman Guthrie decided he was due for another visit to Wendell Foster!

Congressman Guthrie visited with residents in our Intermediate Care Facility, toured Wendell Foster's Assistive Technology and Resource Center and viewed some assistive technology in action, and even had a turn on the Sparkle Station! Thank you, Congressman Guthrie, for taking an interest in Wendell Foster's mission. We hope to have you back on campus soon!
