These three sessions will provide background on how to support our clients' current and future needs by utilizing digital delivery to improve workflow and efficiency of final deliverables

Connected Structural Modeling in Revit

(1 PDH NJ, NY & PA)

Gary Fay,

BIM Coordinator, Simpson Gumpertz and Hager

In this presentation, I will show you how to use Revit to create and model structural elements, such as reinforced concrete or steel connections and with the use of common parameters in Revit and Dynamo scripts, I will demonstrate how all the views and schedules are maintained from a single source of truth. Any change from that single source of truth will update all the other views that show the same information, such as plans, sections, elevations, schedules, and 3D views. This can be done in any of the views that show the information and will eventually be sourced externally from design information.

GIS – A Platform to Support AEC & Local Government

(1 PDH NJ, NY & PA)

David Kunz,

GISP - Vice President of Geospatial Services, ARH Associates

This presentation demonstrates the use of GIS technology within the AEC community. GIS technology is being utilized as by our community as a tool for documenting activities in the field to support construction management, site specific conditions, and integration with other design platforms. This presentation will highlight these uses and discuss the available technologies.

Legislative Update

New Jersey US Senate Race – Democrat primary gets feisty.

There is plenty of other news happening on the New Jersy political scene. The race to see who the Democratic nominee would be intensely heated up this Winter into Spring, with 1st lady Tammy Murphy ultimately pulling out of the race. Her exit means Kim, a three-term congressman from South Jersey, becomes the frontrunner for the Democratic nod and possibly the November general election in a state that hasn’t elected a Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1972. The 41-year-old would be the first-ever Korean-American member of the Senate.

Another ripple from this battle for the nomination is the fate of the New Jersey “political line”. In a safe blue state like New Jersey, the decisive power of the line-formatted primary ballots means that Democratic county parties wield great influence in gubernatorial and senatorial elections—and down-ballot, a Democratic or Republican county party’s endorsed candidate will virtually always win their respective primary elections, amounting to a startling subversion of democracy in safe blue or safe red state and local-level races. In late February, Andy Kim made national headlines when he sued 19 of New Jersey’s county clerks.

Kim’s lawsuit has shaken the New Jersey political world, an unsavory terrain replete with party bosses, patronage networks, and all-powerful machines. Much of New Jersey politics runs through its 21 county parties, which wield incredible control over primary elections. They do this by designing the primary ballots themselves. The “line” format of New Jersey’s primary ballots is strange, often indecipherable, and used nowhere else in the nation. Though these ballots aren’t user-friendly, they serve their purpose well: They help ensure that the choice of the county party will always win a primary election.

Current NJ US Senator Bob Menendez is currently under investigation as he faces numerous corruption charges, including that he acted as an agent for a foreign government, and pressure by fellow Democrats to resign. Menendez claims he’ll run as an Independent this fall if his name is cleared.

Candidates begin to emerge for the 2025 New Jersey Gubernatorial race.

Republican Jack Ciattarelli is making his third run for New Jersey governor, seeking to build on the momentum he had when he nearly defeated incumbent Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy in 2021. Ciattarelli joins state Sen. Jon Bramnick in seeking the Republican nomination for governor, though others have been considering it. In a video released a couple hours before Ciattarelli announced, Bramnick touted his past election victories, particularly in a legislative district with more Democrats than Republicans that President Joe Biden won in 2020.

On the Democrat side a few candidates have dipped their toe in the water but there could be more to announce in the future. So far, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop has announced his candidacy. Former state Senate President Steve Sweeney has also entered the race. Finaly, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has announced he’ll be in the field. There is still plenty of time for this roster to shake out as the primary for both parties isn’t until June of 2025.

Boswell Mourns the Passing of Senior Vice President John Cassetta

It is with great sadness that the Boswell Engineering family shares the news of the devastating loss of Senior Vice President John Cassetta who passed away on March 26th, one day short of his 80th birthday. John was an exceptional person and an instrumental part of the Boswell firm. His encyclopedic knowledge of both the technical and personal aspects of the engineering profession, and his affable persona, made him a highly effective spokesperson for the Boswell brand. Both in the office and at the many events he attended, John’s personality lit up every room he entered.

His stature in the engineering community is exemplified by the boards of the many professional organizations on which he proudly served – including the ACECNJ, where he served as the Chairman of the PANYNJ Transportation Committee, and as the Awards Committee Chair for 12 years. ACECNJ is extremely sadden at the passing of an integral part of our community. John's cheerful demeanor will be missed at all of our events, but his legacy is sure to live on!
