Is Your State KIlling You?

“Deaths of Despair” are rising in some states and decreasing in others. A shocking study from the University of Washington shows that premature deaths are rising in in twenty-one states. The study focused on men and women age 20-55.  In spite of all the medial advances in cancer treatment, HIV and automobile safety, life expectancy is dropping in some states as while its rising in others.

The Good news: California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Texas added 2 years to life expectancy. Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Vermont, Hawaii and New Hampshire gained one year.

The Bad News:  Two-year drops in life expectancy were identified in West Virginia, Kentucky, New Mexico and Oklahoma.  Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Arkansas, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Alaska, and Maine lost one year.

Why?

The soaring Opioid crisis (a 348% increase during the study) along with alcohol, suicide, and obesity coupled with the lack Mental Health Services are the main culprits in individual’s early demise.

At the same time Spain and Portugal have implemented programs that have cut Opioid deaths in half. This program does not focus on incarceration. The program touts that the Opposite of Addiction is not Sobriety it is Connection.  Their program emphasizes reconnecting addicts to community, jobs and education. If we in the US stay committed to punishment rather than rehabilitation and re-connection for medical problems, we can plan on these horrible numbers to continue go in the wrong direction.

If you want to read more Google “Deaths of Despair” there are plenty of articles to deepen your understanding of the issues.

As always we invite your comments.

Men Relationships and Work©
The expectation on today’s professionals has changed drastically in recent years.  Although the numbers of men and women in R&D, Engineering, Sales, Supply Chain and IT are becoming more evenly split, management is still predominately male. Men and women have distinctive ways of thinking and working. The ability for men to be attuned to these differences especially in organizations that still think and manage, in very traditional male ways, is difficult. Unacceptable employee satisfaction scores and unacceptable retention rates of women vs. those of men is an indicator of a systemic problem that must be addressed.
