NEWS & UPDATES
Nature's Response to COVID-19
The pandemic has certainly changed the world and we've all had to make adjustments. However, we can all take to heart that as so many of us hunker down at home, nature has had time to heal!

The unexpected consequence of the COVID-19 crisis is that we now have cleaner air (the peaks of the Himalayan Mountains can be seen in India again); cleaner water (you can see the bottom of the canals in Venice for the first time in a long while); and animals are visiting our habitats (mountain goats are exploring the streets of Wales). Nature is regenerative and it is always seeking to achieve a balance.

This Pandemic, as terrible as it is, does give us the unique opportunity to rethink our relationship with the natural world.

So many of us ‘just want to get out of the house!’ We take walks around our neighbourhood revelling in the fresh air. A good dose of Vitamin N (Nature), applied regularly, not only has physical benefits, but has been shown to boost mental health, raising our serotonin levels (a feel-good chemical in the brain), and reducing cortisol (a stress hormone). Nature can be a soothing balm.

When you are out and about take note of nature’s activities. You may not see goats wandering down your street, but what else can you see?

Tell us what you have observed and how has nature responded in your neighbourhood – are there more birds; are you seeing animals you don’t normally see? And tell us how your neighbours (your human neighbours that is) are responding – are you and your neighbours appreciating walking in nature more; does that walk lift your mood?

Send us your photos and observations or tag us on social media. We'd love to see them and share them with the greater CK Community.
An Important Addition to the Waterfront
Thanks to a generous donation from an Enabling Accessibility grant, courtesy of the Government of Canada, Camp Kawartha is installing a Hoyer Lift . We will be able use the lift to safely move those with limited mobility from our dock into a waiting canoe, kayak or sailboat so that they too can experience the joy of being on the water.

In addition, we have designed a number of our cabins to be fully accessible; we have accessible washrooms and showers; we created a pathway to the waterfront for wheelchairs and scooters; and we have the only accessible climbing wall in the region.

Just prior to the epidemic we were able to purchase a beach chair that will help those with mobility issues enter the water gradually to enjoy the lapping waves and the sensation of buoyancy. This item will be shipped once the epidemic subsides.

It is our goal to make Camp Kawartha as accessible as possible so that all campers, students and guests may fully participate in the magic of camp!
SUMMER CAMP
With less than two months to go, we are on pins-and-needles as we await the arrival of Summer 2020!

In shoring up against the overwhelming nature of the current world crisis, we are delighted to note that Summer Camp morale has only increased in the face of adversity. Indeed, the last few weeks have seen camp spirits soar with optimism and enthusiasm, both within our dedicated summer team and our incredible camper community. Our social media sites have been buzzing with ingenuity and creativity as we maintain this yearly right-of-passage in eagerly anticipating the launch of another Camp Kawartha summer!

In these challenging times, Summer Camp is needed more than ever. Never before has there been such a necessary need to come home to the emotionally nourishing environment that is Camp Kawartha. We all have a stake in the reprieve that camp offers to each and every one of us - camper, family and staff member - and we are thankful for the sense of community this imparts. With that, we extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation towards our beloved camper community and the unwavering spirit of our summer staff team who continue to trust in Summer 2020 and the road ahead. Your high spirits, uplifting correspondence and wholehearted patience and understanding have buoyed our efforts and remind us daily of the importance of Summer Camp.

We wish you the best of health and comfort as we navigate together toward the upcoming summer.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Sincerely,

  Adam (Wham)           James (Gretskie)

Summer Camp Staff are eagerly prepping for Summer Camp and having been working hard to keep things positive among themselves and for all of us in our own homes. They took the time recently to share some hopeful messages with us.

T-Shirt Design Contest
You may have heard that in 2021 Camp Kawartha is celebrating their 100th Anniversary.

We want to give you, our Alumni, Staff, Campers and Families, the opportunity to design the official Summer Camp Centennial T-shirt !

We are looking for a design that best encapsulates what one hundred years of summer camp means to you. Something that is fresh, engaging and relays our incredible heritage.

We look forward to seeing your entries!
NATURE NOTES
Animal Showcase: Bees
Do you know how many types of bees there are in Ontario?

We host an amazing 400 different types! Most of us associate bees with honey production, and while honey bees are now essential (they are not native, but imports) here are several native bees that might enter your garden or yard this spring.
More Virtual Nature Notes are HERE!
Join Jacob on his outdoor learning adventures! Try your hand at making nests, camouflaging eggs, exploring with your senses and more. Stay tuned as we upload more new videos regularly .
FROM THE CK KITCHEN
While they might not be cooking up delicious things at camp our Kitchen Staff are still enjoying some time in their own kitchens. Have you found you're spending more time in the kitchen?
This month Carter put together a great video & instructions on how to make your own stock out of ingredients you might have around the house.
The CK Kitchen is gathering up all their recipes and meal ideas for a possible CK Cookbook . As they flip through their pages of recipes, they would love to hear your suggestions! What are your favourite camp meals, what trip food do you love the most, and what is ‘iconic’ camp food to you?
