Dunwoody Woman's Club Evening Division
Rosemary Watts, wrosemary@hotmail.com
The Evening Division had 17 people in attendance for the Music Bingo Trial Fundraiser at our March meeting. Kudos to Lisa Benson who organized the fun event and created 5 raffle baskets and 4 prize bags filled with items donated by members and local businesses. We had fun guessing and crossing off popular "bar" and "TV show" songs from our bingo cards. We will refine this event and try to make it an official evening division fundraising event in the future.
Thursday, April 24th Evening Division Meeting at 5:45pm. We'll be making toys for an animal shelter led by Kristin Lutch and Angela Neimann in the Dunwoody United Methodist Church Young Adult Suite. Please bring scissors, old t-shirts you don't want, and tennis balls (new or used). Sign up below.

April is National Poetry Month and is a time to celebrate the beauty and importance of poetry, with activities and events taking place across the country.
Sharing a poem from poem-a-day at poets.org by Scottie McKenzie Frasier.
A butterfly dancing in the sunlight,
A bird singing to his mate,
The whispering pines,
The restless sea,
The gigantic mountains,
A stately tree,
The rain upon the roof,
The sun at early dawn,
A boy with rod and hook,
The babble of a shady brook,
A woman with her smiling babe,
A man whose eyes are kind and wise,
Youth that is eager and unafraid—
When all is said, I do love best
A little home where love abides,
And where there’s kindness, peace, and rest.

Women in History
Suzanne Bentz
Oveta Culp Hobby
First US Secretary of Health,
Education & Welfare
General Dwight D. Eisenhower was so impressed with the women who reduced in record time the backlog of mail to and from our soldiers fighting in the European Theatre during WWII, that he appealed to Washington for more women to fill in the gaps in the Army left by the shortage of men. Many of the new recruits put boots to the ground in North Africa where Allies battled Vichy French forces. Oveta Culp Hobby was on hand to see it all play out and had a hand in shaping the new Women’s Army Corps.
Oveta was born in 1905 in Killeen, Texas. She studied law in college but did not take degrees from the several colleges she attended. Instead, she took up a career in journalism at age 26. During WWII, Oveta headed the Women’s Interest Section in the War Department’s Bureau of Public Relations … then became director of what would become the Women’s Army Corps. She was commissioned a colonel in the US Army in July 1943.
Oveta worked tirelessly to integrate the WACs within our military and strengthen the Corps image. She raised standards and, using her public relations skills, “created a Code of Conduct specific to the WAC to create a tightly regulated, organization that portrayed women’s corps in good light.” Oveta achieved the rank of colonel and received the Distinguished Service Medal for her war efforts. “She was the first woman in the Army to receive this award.”
Oveta joined the Eisenhower administration after the war and became the first secretary and first woman of the new Department of Health, Education, and Welfare on April 11, 1953. “Among other decisions and actions at HEW, she made the decision to approve Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine.” After meeting strong resistance attempting to restructure Social Security payroll taxes (some things never change in D.C.), Oveta quit and went back to Texas to help run the “Houston Post” as president and editor for her ailing husband.
Oveta died of a stroke in 1995 in Houston. In 1996, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
