April is Earth Month, and the UNM Office of Sustainability invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to take part in a full lineup of events focused on environmental action, education, and connection.

Next week we will kick off our hands-on opportunities and engaging programs including campus cleanups, interactive workshops, and an environmental film screening. These events are designed to inspire sustainable habits, strengthen community, and highlight the work happening across campus to build a more resilient future.

Don’t miss signature events like the 16th Annual Sustainability Expo (4/23), where campus and community partners come together to showcase innovative sustainability efforts and resources. You can also bring your team along to enjoy planting UNM's biological future by attending one of the Campus Clean Up Days from 9 AM-11 AM (North Campus 4/22; Central Campus 4/24). On Friday, stick around for the National Arbor Day Celebration, where we will launch our NEW! Campus Arboretum signs and tours! You can preview the tours on the campus interactive map or by exploring our Arboretum page.

Whether you're looking to get involved, learn something new, or simply spend more time outdoors, Earth Month at UNM offers something for everyone.

16th Annual Sustainability Expo at UNM

Every spring, Sustainability Studies and partners transform UNM's Cornell Mall into a vibrant celebration of local food, community resilience, and regional partnership. The Sustainability Expo - now in its sixteenth year - brings together roughly 100 booths featuring local farms, value-added producers, artisans, musicians, community organizations, NGOs, and city, county, and state agencies for an afternoon of connection, learning, and good food.

It's colorful, it's fun, and it's a reminder that the relationships at the heart of this program extend far beyond the classroom.

Join us at the Cornell Mall on April 23rd from 10:30 AM - 2:30 PM.

Bike to UNM Day

Celebrate National Bike Month by riding to UNM on May 6th and visiting one of two welcome stations from 7:30 to 10 AM on North Campus (visit Upper Plaza Shade Structure) and Central Campus (in front of Johnson Center).

We will have tables with information and giveaways from a wide array of bike and green transportation partners from across Albuquerque. The first 50 riders, at each location, will get a breakfast burrito for stopping by!

We will also host two group rides taking off from Civic Plaza and Hyder Park. RSVP for a group ride here.

Visit sustainability.unm.edu for more info.

The film will be screened at the UNM Movie Theater in the Student Union Building the evening of April 23, 2026, starting at 6 PM (doors open at 5:30) followed by a Q&A with some of those involved in the film.

Get Ready for City Nature Challenge!

The Office of Sustainability at UNM invites you to join in this year's City Nature Challenge to help document the wild plants and animals in and around urban areas! You can join our team by following this link.

This global event will take place from April 24 to May 10, 2026. The observation period is Friday through Monday (4/24 - 4/27), followed by the identification period (4/28 - 5/10). We will have an information booth at our Arbor Day celebration on the 24th at the Duck Pond.

You can make observations anywhere you find wildlife, but please spend some time documenting plants and wildlife in urban areas and neighborhoods to help fill the gaps in our urban biodiversity map! Please avoid documenting pets, people, or potted plants.

How do I participate?

All UNM students, staff, faculty, and friends are invited to join the challenge, and we want as many people as possible involved. Check out the NM Backyard Refuge page for more!
