Uplifting Voices Through Second Chances
April is recognized as Second Chance Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges faced by individuals reentering society after incarceration—and the importance of supporting their journey forward. At NCFamU, this month holds special meaning as a proud recipient of the Second Chance Act: Addressing the Needs of Incarcerated Parents and Their Minor Children. Through this opportunity, we are focusing our efforts on supporting incarcerated parents, helping them strengthen their parenting skills, emotional well-being, and family connections from behind the walls.
Second Chance Month also calls on communities to reimagine what justice and rehabilitation truly look like. Many individuals face enormous barriers upon release, from housing and employment to rebuilding trust with their families. By investing in incarcerated parents now, we are actively working to break cycles of trauma and disconnection, and instead create space for healing, restoration, and opportunity.

At NCFamU, we believe every parent deserves the chance to grow, reconnect, and build a brighter future—for themselves and for their children. | | National Child Abuse Prevention Month
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to recognize the importance of communities working together to protect children and strengthen families. Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment, yet many face challenges that can impact their well-being and development. By promoting awareness and providing families with the tools and resources they need, we can help prevent abuse before it occurs.
This month is also a reminder that prevention is a collective responsibility. From educators and healthcare professionals to neighbors and community leaders, everyone has a role to play in building a culture that supports healthy family dynamics and safeguards children. Whether through parenting education, mental health support, or early intervention services, we can all contribute to breaking cycles of abuse and ensuring that children feel protected, valued, and heard. voices, stand together, and keep the momentum going—not just this month, but all year long.
| | National Autism Awareness Month | |
National Autism Awareness Month is an opportunity to celebrate neurodiversity and advocate for acceptance and inclusion of individuals with autism. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects people in unique ways, and while each person’s journey is different, all individuals on the spectrum deserve to be seen, supported, and empowered to thrive. This month encourages us to move beyond awareness and embrace a deeper understanding of the strengths, challenges, and potential of those with autism.
It’s also a time to spotlight the importance of early diagnosis, access to tailored support services, and inclusive education and employment opportunities. When communities are informed and inclusive, individuals with autism can flourish in environments that honor their communication styles, creativity, and perspective. Let's continue to foster understanding and break down the barriers that prevent people with autism from fully participating in society.
| | | National Minority Health Month | |
Observed each April, National Minority Health Month brings attention to the health disparities that disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minority communities. Rooted in historical inequities and systemic barriers, these disparities impact access to care, quality of care, and health outcomes. This month calls on communities, healthcare systems, and policymakers to work collaboratively in closing the gap and advancing health equity for all.
Promoting health equity means making sure everyone—regardless of race, ethnicity, income, or background—has the opportunity to live a healthy life. From culturally competent care to better representation in healthcare professions, there are numerous ways we can advocate for change. Education, prevention, and inclusive health policies are vital steps toward building a future where everyone has access to the resources they need to thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally.

We’re excited to share that RHA Health Services has opened a new Behavioral Health Urgent Care (BHUC) in Lenoir, NC, expanding access to critical mental health services in our region. This new facility is designed to provide timely, short-term care for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis—offering an alternative to emergency rooms for those needing immediate behavioral health support.
Located in Caldwell County, the BHUC provides 24/7 walk-in access to assessments, stabilization services, and referrals to ongoing care. This is a huge step forward in addressing mental health needs locally and helping to ease the strain on hospitals and emergency services. The availability of urgent mental health care is especially crucial in rural and underserved areas, and we’re grateful for the impact this center will have on individuals and families across western North Carolina.
