Hello Dear Readers:
I'm happy to announce that I have an official sponsor for the Chile Lindo newsletter! Gracias Fernando Olmedo, owner and founder of
Vino Sur
wine imports, for your valuable support.
After 24 years of building the brand, Chile Lindo is now an official brand ambassador (they say it takes 30 years to be an overnight success). Yes indeed, Spring has arrived to the northern hemisphere and it's time to flourish... to harvest... after many years of prepping the soil. What better way to start than with a wine sponsor?
Vino Sur distributes primarily--but not exclusively--Chilean wines. One of their main California imports is
Casa Patronales
.
One of their most exquisite wines is Casa Patronales Carménère Reserva Privada.
The story behind Chilean Carménère is interesting as the Carménère grape was once mistaken for Merlot. For nearly 150 years, Carménère wine grapes were thought extinct worldwide due to the spread of phylloxera in Europe in the mid-1800s. However, phylloxera never reached Chile due to Chile's geographical isolation. In 1997, Jean-Michel Boursiquot, an expert in the study of grape classification, almost by chance, recognized the Carménère grape and the rest is history.
Following is an article from
The Washington Post
:
"However, the grape avoided extinction by jumping a ship for the New World shortly before the phylloxera crisis hit France. When vineyards were established in Chile between 1850 and 1870, much of the plant material was imported from Bordeaux, and Carmenere was included."

My first taste of Casa Patronales wines was at various Chilean cultural events sponsored by Vino Sur. Soon enough I noticed this excellent wine on the shelves of numerous local stores and--mind you--at a reasonable price. In fact, all this talk about wine has me ready to go buy a bottle right now at my corner store that carries the brand.
Remember that in Chile wine and empanadas go hand in hand, so when in California, do as the Chileans do and live-it-up with Chile Lindo empanadas and Casa Patronales wine. ¡Salud!

In over a decade of writing this newsletter I have
never
before published one of my own poems. I must say that I am happiest among poets. I admire their capacity to depict rawness with beauty and to live by a fatal sense of romance that, although it can be lethal, is yet what makes us immortal. I may not get a chance to read at Poems Under the Dome this Thursday, so I'll just publish the following here... dedicated to the sanctuary City of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Saint Francis’ City of Hope
By Paula Tejeda
On the backs of the hopeful,
fickle San Francisco,
twinkles and glitters,
cashing in on “ We the People.”
Its international charm,
trumpets musicians! Artists!
Stone-broke. Drinking.
A tip for mortals, begs madness.
Towering overhead
ominous cranes,
--erect crystal skyscrapers,
--crush misty horizons.
Elegant Painted Ladies:
postcard row Victorians,
splendor over drifters,
reenact the “Hungry Forties.”
Callous we walk
amidst the demented,
‘till a homie’s psyche
splinters—overburdened.
The poets howl:
“Holy City Hall!”
“Let loose of the reins!”
“Stop strangling your subjects!”
Sanctuary city of Saint Francis,
mounting high-rise of refuse,
a fragile heaven for the destitute,
a prophetic omen for our Nation.

Rupa started slinging her guitar around the Mission at the Mission Cultural Center and the Red Poppy Art House. Look at her now! Wow. What an extraordinary journey. Congratulations Rupa and the April Fishes.

Save the Date! Fifth Year Anniversary!
Flower Piano 2019
July 11 - 22
Piano Sculpture by Mauro Ffortissimo
|
|
It was a privilege to attend Lawrence Ferlinghetti's 100th birthday celebration; it proved that San Francisco's youthful spirit is rooted in those over 50. Grey hair and colorful skirts, jackets, and scarves were the fashion statements of the day. You can't fake authenticity... and the North Beach stretch outside City Lights was the real deal on Sunday, March 24th, 2019.
One of my proudest event production moments was when I organized a fundraiser called "Poets for Chile," after the 2010 devastating earthquake. The event took place at Sara Powell's performance space in the Mission, Kaleidoscope: Free Speech Zone.
|
|
|
"Poets for Chile" would not have been possible without the support of the North Beach artists and poets, specifically Agneta Falk Hirschman, wife of Poet Laureate of San Francisco Jack Hirschman and a poet and painter in her own right. She rallied the troops, and the donations of paintings by San Francisco artists was remarkable. One such painting was donated by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. It was a day that San Francisco's poets, from North Beach to the Mission, were allied with Chile's historical poetic identity.
Thank you Sara for hosting "Poets for Chile" at Kaleidoscope and thank you Aggie for being the force behind organizing the artists and poets that made it possible. The auction raised $1,000--a significant sum for a fundraiser created and attended by poets.
